# Best Travel Blanket for Airplanes and Long Flights (2026)

I started looking for the best travel blanket on a night flight from Lisbon to São Paulo in December 2023. I had a window seat, a thin airline blanket and ten hours to learn that it could cover my knees or my shoulders, never both. By the Canary Islands my rain jacket was over my feet.

The trouble was length. A blanket that works on a plane runs about 60 in long, stays on while you sleep and packs small enough to leave room in your bag. Below are the 11 I’d shortlist, sorted by the kind of trip you’re taking.

## The best travel blanket for each kind of trip

| If you need | Pick | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Best overall | [Gravel Layover](#tpg-gravel-layover-travel-blanket) | 66 in long, foot pocket, about 12 oz |
| Long-haul natural fiber | [COCOON Merino Wool/Silk](#tpg-cocoon-merino-silk-travel-blanket) | 55 x 70 in, wool handles moisture vapor |
| Packable and wearable | [Rumpl Travel Puffy](#tpg-rumpl-travel-puffy-blanket) | 4 x 10 in roll, Cape Clip |
| Most coverage from a small case | [BlueHills Compact](#tpg-bluehills-ultra-compact-travel-blanket) | 70 x 56 in from a 9 x 4.5 in case |
| Fleece with a pillow | [EverSnug](#tpg-eversnug-travel-blanket-pillow) | Case works as a pillow, clips to a backpack |
| Budget | [PAVILIA](#tpg-pavilia-travel-blanket-pillow) | 260 GSM fleece with a strap for your suitcase |

Sizes and weights come from each Amazon listing. “Not listed” means the listing prints no figure. I compared specs and did not lab test these.

## Why planes feel cold and airline blankets fall short

No regulation sets the temperature of a passenger cabin in normal flight, according to a [2026 National Academies report](https://www.nationalacademies.org/read/29472/chapter/2). The industry standard, ASHRAE 161, targets [65 to 75°F (18 to 24°C)](https://www.nationalacademies.org/read/29472/chapter/4). That range feels different when you sit still for nine hours. The same report notes that passengers are sedentary while crew burn energy at 1.5 to 2 times the rate, and that cold discomfort builds on long-haul flights. Humidity sits at [10 to 20 percent](https://www.nationalacademies.org/read/29472/chapter/4).

Don’t plan on a free blanket either. Delta lists one in Main on [most long-haul international flights](https://pro.delta.com/content/agency/us/en/products-and-services/in-flight/main-cabin.html), which leaves domestic flights unlisted. Emirates [stocks them in Economy](https://www.emirates.com/media-centre/emirates-crowned-as-2024-apex-world-class-airline-with-additional-award-for-economy-class-amenity-kit/). United [restored domestic and red-eye blankets](https://liveandletsfly.com/united-airlines-blankets-domestic/) in November 2023 after a short-lived cut. Policies move, so check your flight and assume nothing on a short-haul leg.

I made that assumption once, on a Los Angeles to New York red-eye in May 2018. It was 26°C when I left the hotel in a linen shirt, the crew had no blankets to hand out and I spent the night wearing most of my bag.

## How to choose a travel blanket for a plane

Three numbers decide this: length, width and packed size. Everything else is preference.

### Length: 60 in reaches your feet

A blanket has to run from your collarbone over your lap and knees and down toward the floor. AFAR’s writer found a [52 in Rumpl](https://www.afar.com/magazine/rumpl-blanket-review-the-best-travel-blanket-for-airplanes) reached from neck to toes. Cabeau sells 60 in as its chin-to-toe length. If you’re taller than average, buy 60 in or more. Standard throws at home are [50 x 60 in](https://casper.com/blog/throw-blanket-size/), so measure the one on your sofa against yourself in a chair.

### Width: 40 in fits the seat

Delta’s economy seats run [17.3 to 18.1 in wide](https://www.delta.com/us/en/aircraft/airbus/a350). A 40 in blanket covers your seat and tucks in on both sides without crossing into your neighbor’s space. A 56 in blanket spills onto the next seat, so fold it double lengthwise, which also doubles the layers over your body.

### Packed size: a case is not the same as a fit

Under-seat space is what you’re really spending. A 12 x 11 in pillow pouch takes up a good part of a small backpack, while a 7 x 5 x 3 in stuff sack fits beside a laptop. In March 2019 I bought a fleece blanket in a pouch at Malpensa for a carry-on-only week in Marrakech. It filled a quarter of the bag and I left it in the riad closet on the last morning. Compare the packed size with your bag before you buy, or plan to clip the case outside it.

### Material: what each one does

| Material | Warmth for its size | Packed size | Care | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Polyester fleece | Medium; heavier GSM is warmer | Largest | Machine wash, low heat | Occasional flyers |
| Synthetic insulation | High | Small | Machine wash | Packing light, damp conditions |
| Merino or wool blend | Medium to high | Large | Gentle wool cycle, dry flat | Long-haul, natural-fiber fans |
| Down | Highest | Very small | Wash with care, dry fully | Dry conditions |
| Silk | Low | Tiny | Follow the label | A clean extra layer |
| Cotton | Low | Medium | Machine wash | Cool cabins, warm destinations |

Down [loses much of its warmth when wet](https://www.outdoorresearch.com/blog/article/down-vs.-synthetic-whats-the-difference-between-down-and-synthetic-insulati) and dries slowly, while synthetic fill keeps working. That matters more at a campsite than in a dry cabin. Fleece [holds under 1 percent of its weight in water](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polar_fleece) and dries in hours, which suits a blanket you wash in a hotel sink.

## Best travel blanket for long flights

On a flight of nine hours or more, coverage and staying power count most. A blanket that slides off at 3 a.m. wakes you up. For a repeat of that São Paulo flight, I’d choose one of these two.

### Gravel Layover: best overall

At 66 x 40 in the Gravel is longer than the Rumpl, and it packs into a 7 x 5 x 3 in sack. The neck snaps and foot pocket solve the two usual complaints: a blanket that slides off and feet that stick out. The shell is nylon rather than plush fleece, so it won’t feel like a sofa throw. Cold sleepers should note the 40 g/m2 fill is light insulation, made for a heated cabin.

[![Gravel Layover Blanket](https://33travels.com/wp-content/uploads/packing-guides/_products/B08QR8LJDF.webp)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08QR8LJDF?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=best-travel-blanket)

Gravel Layover BlanketPremium

Neck snaps hold it on your shoulders and the foot pocket closes off floor-level drafts. At 66 in long it reaches the feet of tall flyers.

- 66 x 40 in, about 12.4 oz, 20D nylon shell with recycled-fill insulation
- Packs to 7 x 5 x 3 in; neck snaps and foot pocket; machine washable

[Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08QR8LJDF?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=best-travel-blanket)

### COCOON Merino Wool/Silk: best natural fiber

Wool [absorbs moisture vapor and releases it](https://www.woolmark.com/performance/why-workout-wool/), which helps when a cabin runs warm at boarding and cold at hour six. At 70 x 55 in it’s among the largest blankets here. The listing prints no weight and calls it both lightweight and heavyweight, so plan for real bag space or carry it folded over your arm. The listing says it’s machine washable.

Wool is also the fabric I’d reach for away from planes. On the overnight ferry from Naples to Palermo in October 2021, a wool wrap over my lap was the only thing between me and the lounge air conditioning.

[![COCOON Merino Wool/Silk Blanket](https://33travels.com/wp-content/uploads/packing-guides/_products/B0CH3HG29M.webp)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CH3HG29M?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=best-travel-blanket)

COCOON Merino Wool/Silk BlanketPremium

The natural-fiber pick. Wool handles moisture vapor well on a 12-hour flight, and 70 x 55 in is enough to wrap around you.

- Merino wool and silk blend, 70 x 55 in
- Machine washable; listed for flights, road trips and camping

*Long crossings and sleeper trains can run as cold as planes.*

## Best packable travel blanket

A packable travel blanket earns its spot by leaving room for everything else. Check the packed size before the flat size.

### Rumpl Travel Puffy: most wearable

At 12.6 oz the Rumpl weighs about the same as the Gravel, and its 4 x 10 in roll slides into a backpack’s side pocket where a square pouch won’t. The Cape Clip fastens it around your shoulders, which helps when you get up or reach for a bag. At 52 x 38 in it’s the shortest blanket here, so taller flyers get less coverage. It’s also the one to take camping, with a water-repellent finish on the shell.

[![Rumpl Travel Puffy](https://33travels.com/wp-content/uploads/packing-guides/_products/B0GJ12WSV3.webp)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GJ12WSV3?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=best-travel-blanket)

Rumpl Travel PuffyPremium

Synthetic insulation in a 4 x 10 in roll that slides into a bag's side pocket. The Cape Clip keeps it on your shoulders on planes and at chilly campsites.

- 52 x 38 in, 0.79 lb, packs into a roll-top stuff sack
- Nanoloft synthetic insulation; machine washable; includes a Cape Clip

[Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GJ12WSV3?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=best-travel-blanket)

### BlueHills Compact: most coverage in a small case

This is the best compact travel blanket for coverage: 70 x 56 in of fleece from a 9 x 4.5 in case. The listing gives weight only as under 1 lb, and the width is more than a seat needs, so fold it lengthwise. Couples sharing one blanket across two seats get the most from it.

[![BlueHills Compact Blanket](https://33travels.com/wp-content/uploads/packing-guides/_products/B082LQWD4M.webp)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082LQWD4M?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=best-travel-blanket)

BlueHills Compact BlanketMid-range

A 70 x 56 in fleece blanket from a 9 x 4.5 in case, with a belt that attaches to your luggage. Wide enough to fold double on a cold flight.

- Microfiber blanket, 70 x 56 in, packs into a 9 x 4.5 in case
- Case has an attached hand luggage belt and a backpack clip

[Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082LQWD4M?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=best-travel-blanket)

*A stuff sack clipped to a strap leaves the bag itself for everything else.*

## Best travel blanket for airplane comfort on a budget

Fleece costs less than insulated nylon. The trade-off is packed size, and most of these cases do a second job to make up for it.

### EverSnug: best mid-range fleece

The EverSnug’s 65 x 40 in size nearly matches the Gravel’s coverage, and the zip case becomes a pillow with the blanket inside. A sleeve lets it ride on a suitcase handle.

[![EverSnug Travel Blanket](https://33travels.com/wp-content/uploads/packing-guides/_products/B08P8FKQ6T.webp)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08P8FKQ6T?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=best-travel-blanket)

EverSnug Travel BlanketMid-range

A 65 x 40 in microplush blanket with a zip case that works as a pillow and clips to a backpack. The length reaches the feet of most adults.

- Microplush polyester blanket, 65 x 40 in, machine washable
- Zippered carrying case works as a pillow; luggage sleeve and clip included

[Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08P8FKQ6T?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=best-travel-blanket)

### PAVILIA: best budget pick

Most fleece listings give no fabric weight. PAVILIA prints 260 GSM, a useful number when you’re comparing warmth. The 60 x 43 in size reaches the feet of most adults. The 12 x 11 in pouch is among the largest packed sizes in this guide, so plan to strap it to your suitcase.

[![PAVILIA Travel Blanket Pillow](https://33travels.com/wp-content/uploads/packing-guides/_products/B07ZZK6QJV.webp)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZZK6QJV?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=best-travel-blanket)

PAVILIA Travel Blanket PillowBudget

A printed fabric weight is rare in this category. At 260 GSM this is a medium fleece, with a pillow pouch and a strap that fits a suitcase handle.

- 260 GSM microfleece polyester, 60 x 43 in; pouch is 12 x 11 in
- Dual-zipper pouch works as a pillow; detachable buckle strap fits luggage

[Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZZK6QJV?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=best-travel-blanket)

### Cabeau Fold ’n Go: best for sore backs

Cabeau makes neck pillows, and this case works as lumbar support or a seat cushion. At 36 in wide it’s the narrowest blanket here, so it lies over you rather than wrapping around you. The listing prints no weight or case size for this version.

[![Cabeau Fold 'n Go Blanket](https://33travels.com/wp-content/uploads/packing-guides/_products/B07RMJWVWZ.webp)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RMJWVWZ?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=best-travel-blanket)

Cabeau Fold 'n Go BlanketBudget

The case doubles as lumbar support or a seat cushion, which helps in a hard seat. Narrow at 36 in, so it covers you but won't wrap around you.

- French microfiber blanket, 60 x 36 in, listed as covering chin to toe
- Case doubles as lumbar support, seat cushion or pillow; has a carry handle

[Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RMJWVWZ?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=best-travel-blanket)

### Kululu Poncho: best wearable fleece

A poncho solves the sliding problem without snaps or clips, and you can stand up without gathering anything. The 62 x 45 in cut has a pocket and packs into a pouch with a luggage strap. Keep your seat belt visible over the top, since crew will ask to see it.

[![Kululu Poncho Blanket Set](https://33travels.com/wp-content/uploads/packing-guides/_products/B096ZM9VYN.webp)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B096ZM9VYN?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=best-travel-blanket)

Kululu Poncho Blanket SetMid-range

A poncho cut that stays on your shoulders when you sleep, stand or reach for the tray table. No clips or snaps to manage.

- Micro-plush fleece, 62 x 45 in, machine washable
- Pouch is 11.8 x 11.8 x 2.3 in with a luggage strap and a pocket

[Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B096ZM9VYN?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=best-travel-blanket)

### Brookstone: fleece with a foot pocket

The Brookstone is a basic fleece at 57 x 40.75 in, and its pouch converts into a pillow. Foot pockets are uncommon at this tier, and it’s the only Budget pick here that has one. Choose the foot-pocket style when you order.

[![Brookstone Travel Blanket](https://33travels.com/wp-content/uploads/packing-guides/_products/B0B75KLPC1.webp)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B75KLPC1?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=best-travel-blanket)

## Travel blanket alternatives

A blanket isn’t the only answer, and frequent flyers often skip it. On short hops I do too, and wear my warmest layer aboard.

### COCOON Silk MummyLiner: for hostels and sleeper trains

A liner gives you a clean layer on a shared bed and adds warmth under a thin airline blanket. It’s listed at about 130 g and 6 x 4 in, the smallest item in this guide.

[![COCOON Silk MummyLiner](https://33travels.com/wp-content/uploads/packing-guides/_products/B001DX5O6I.webp)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001DX5O6I?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=best-travel-blanket)

COCOON Silk MummyLinerPremium

A clean layer for hostels, huts and sleeper trains that weighs about 130 g. It adds warmth under a thin airline blanket and does not replace one.

- 100% natural silk mummy-shaped liner, listed at about 0.13 kg
- Packs small enough for a daypack; drawstring closure

[Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001DX5O6I?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=best-travel-blanket)

### Dreamsoft Cotton Wrap: for cool cabins

At 78 x 28 in the wrap covers your shoulders or your legs, and it works as a scarf after you land. Cotton is the wrong fabric for a cold cabin, so treat it as a light layer for warm-weather trips.

[![Dreamsoft Cotton Travel Wrap](https://33travels.com/wp-content/uploads/packing-guides/_products/B0C1LJVNTP.webp)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C1LJVNTP?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=best-travel-blanket)

Dreamsoft Cotton Travel WrapMid-range

A 78 x 28 in cotton wrap that stays useful after you land, as a scarf or cover-up. It suits cool cabins, not cold ones.

- Cotton, 78 x 28 in, about 14 oz, machine washable
- Lightweight weave, listed as a scarf and shawl that can double as an airplane blanket

[Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C1LJVNTP?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=best-travel-blanket)

## Best travel blanket Reddit threads: what people use

The best travel blanket Reddit threads rarely name a blanket. In [r/onebag](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/13gzlt6/anyone_pack_a_travel_blanket/), common advice is to wear your bulkiest layer aboard and drape a fleece over yourself, or to carry a large linen shawl that also serves as a towel and sheet. Others in [the same sub](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1o1njhe/wearable_sleeping_bag_on_airplane/) ask the crew for a second airline blanket and add a silk liner underneath. A [thread on r/delta](https://www.reddit.com/r/delta/comments/19d4c75/no_blanket_for_8_hour_flight/) shows the risk of that plan: one flyer got no blanket on an eight-hour flight.

## What to pack with your travel blanket

A blanket works better as part of a small seat kit. Our [travel pillow guide](https://33travels.com/best-travel-pillow/) covers your neck, and the list below covers the rest.

Within reach at your seat

- Travel blanket, on top of the bag
- Thick socks
- Hoodie or fleece for boarding and landing
- Eye mask and earplugs

For a night flight

- Neck pillow, if the blanket case is not your pillow
- Lip balm and hand cream for 10-20% humidity
- Empty water bottle to fill after security

## Travel blanket FAQ

Can you bring your own blanket on a plane?

Yes. TSA [allows blankets](https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/items/blankets) in carry-on and checked bags. The airline may count it as a bag, though: Southwest [lists a blanket](https://yourmileagemayvary.com/2025/09/13/the-airlines-that-say-a-pillow-or-blanket-is-your-one-only-carry-on/) as a personal item. Packing it inside your bag settles the question.

Are airline blankets washed between flights?

Airlines say yes. Delta has said blankets are [laundered after each use](https://www.foxnews.com/travel/airplane-blankets-pillows-flights), and American has said each one is [washed and re-wrapped](https://www.smartertravel.com/do-airplane-blankets-really-not-get-washed/). No federal rule sets a schedule, [AFAR reports](https://www.afar.com/magazine/how-are-airplane-blankets-seats-and-bathrooms-cleaned), so a sealed bag is your best evidence. Skip one that arrives loose on the seat.

Can you use a heated blanket on a plane?

Treat it as battery gear. The FAA [caps lithium-ion batteries](https://www.faa.gov/hazmat/packsafe/lithium-batteries) at 100 Wh without airline approval and keeps spares and power banks in the cabin. Using it is up to the airline: Emirates [bans power bank use](https://www.khaleejtimes.com/business/aviation/emirates-bans-power-banks-on-board-what-rules-do-other-airlines-follow) on board, which stops a blanket that runs from one. I left heated blankets off this list because the listings I found were unbranded.

How do you wash a travel blanket?

Follow the label, then let the blanket dry fully before it goes back in its case, since a damp blanket in a pouch starts to smell. Skip high heat on polyester fleece. Merino needs a gentle wool cycle with mild detergent and should [dry flat](https://www.woolmark.com/care/how-to-wash-wool/).

Is a travel blanket worth it if the airline gives you one?

On a long-haul flight with a blanket at every seat, a warm layer may be enough. It pays off on red-eyes and domestic legs where supply is unreliable, and for anyone who sleeps cold or dislikes shared bedding. It also works on trains, in hotels with thin bedding and at campsites.

Can a travel blanket replace a sleeping bag?

No, except on warm nights indoors. Even the insulated picks here are thin, built for a heated cabin rather than a cold tent. Use one as a top layer at a campsite, a picnic throw or a cover on a cool hostel bed.
