On an average July afternoon that station reads 87 F while the Boardwalk sits at 80 F, and on a January night the coast is five degrees milder but the wind off the ocean takes that back and more. So what to pack for Atlantic City starts with one rule: plan for the coast, not the forecast. The second rule depends on who is going. A day trip on the train, a casino weekend for two, a family beach week and a bachelorette party need different bags. Each gets its own section below, and every month gets one after that. ## What to pack for Atlantic City: one core bag, four trips Every trip, in every month, needs these: - **A wind layer.** The Boardwalk runs about six miles with open ocean on one side. Water at the Atlantic City tide gauge is around 58 F in May and 64 F in June, and only reaches 70 to 72 F from July to September. September is the warmest month for swimming even though the air has started to cool. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and nor’easters bring coastal wind and flooding from September to April. ## Packing for a day trip by bus or train Most day-trippers arrive on a casino bus from New York or North Jersey, or on the NJ Transit Atlantic City Rail Line from 30th Street Station in Philadelphia. The train stops at the Atlantic City Rail Terminal next to the Convention Center, a few blocks from the Boardwalk, and a free jitney runs to the casinos around train times. On the current NJ Transit schedule the last train back to Philadelphia leaves before 11 p.m., and the casino buses have fixed return times. ## Packing for a casino weekend for two The gaming floors have no formal dress code. In June 2014, on a three-day press trip, I packed two swimsuits and neither went past my knees in the sea.
