# What to Pack for Las Vegas: Carry-On, Day Bag and Every Month

Las Vegas gets about 4 inches of rain a year, and its July nights rarely drop below 80°F. Inside, the casinos, theaters and restaurants run the air conditioning hard enough that people in shorts reach for a sleeve. The trip happens in two climates at once, and the bag has to cover both.

So what to pack for Las Vegas comes down to three bags: what flies with you, what can sit in the suitcase and what you carry from 10 a.m. until the last show lets out. The month you travel then decides the outer layer.

## What to pack for Las Vegas, bag by bag

**Carry-on:** photo ID (a passport if you are not from the US and plan to go clubbing), phone charger, medication, a thin layer for the plane and the casino floor, lip balm and sunscreen in containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, and one outfit plus a swimsuit in case the suitcase arrives late.

**Checked bag or the rest of the suitcase:** walking shoes plus one dressier pair, a pool outfit, one or two night outfits, full-size sunscreen and moisturizer, and a real coat if you travel between November and February.

**Day bag:** a small zipped crossbody, a refillable water bottle, sunglasses, a hat and a phone battery. Keep it small. Clubs, arenas and Hoover Dam all search bags.

## Las Vegas weather by month

The table uses the 1991-2020 normals for Harry Reid International Airport, the same figures the [National Weather Service in Las Vegas](https://www.weather.gov/vef/1991-2020Normals) publishes.

| Month | High °F / °C | Low °F / °C | Rain days | What to wear |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Jan | 59 / 15 | 41 / 5 | 3 | Jacket and long pants; cold nights |
| Feb | 63 / 17 | 44 / 7 | 4 | Jacket and layers; cool evenings |
| Mar | 71 / 22 | 51 / 11 | 3 | Light layers, jacket after dark; breezy |
| Apr | 79 / 26 | 57 / 14 | 2 | T-shirts, light jacket; windy spells |
| May | 89 / 32 | 66 / 19 | 1 | Summer clothes; sun hat, light layer indoors |
| Jun | 99 / 37 | 76 / 24 | 0 | Lightest fabrics, sun cover; very hot |
| Jul | 105 / 41 | 82 / 28 | 3 | Lightest fabrics; dangerous heat, storms possible |
| Aug | 103 / 39 | 81 / 27 | 2 | Lightest fabrics; extreme heat, monsoon storms |
| Sep | 95 / 35 | 72 / 22 | 2 | Hot days, sun cover; warm evenings |
| Oct | 81 / 27 | 60 / 16 | 2 | Shorts days, light jacket at night |
| Nov | 67 / 19 | 47 / 8 | 2 | Layers; jacket and long pants at night |
| Dec | 57 / 14 | 40 / 4 | 3 | Warm jacket, long pants; cold nights |

Three numbers drive most packing decisions. July’s normal high is 105°F, and its nights bottom out near 82°F. December averages a low of 40°F, close to what a Midwest October feels like after dark. And humidity often sits below 25%, which is why lips, skin and eyes dry out within a day and why sweat evaporates before you notice it.

The dry air also makes the swings bigger than the table suggests. A March afternoon at 71°F can fall to the low 50s by the time dinner ends, and spring wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph are normal.

## The carry-on: what flies with you

Most Las Vegas trips are short, so plenty of visitors go carry-on only. That works from April to October, when the clothes are light. Between November and February a coat and boots take up half a carry-on, so wear the bulkiest pieces on the plane.

The TSA [liquids rule](https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/liquids-rule) limits sunscreen, moisturizer and hair products to 3.4 oz (100 ml) per container, all in one quart bag. Desert sun and dry air use up both faster than at home, so a carry-on-only traveler either brings travel sizes and restocks at a CVS or Walgreens on the Strip, or packs solid sunscreen sticks and lip balm, which take less room.

Put ID in the carry-on, not the suitcase. Clubs and dayclubs are 21+ and check government photo ID at the door. [Wynn’s XS](https://www.wynnlasvegas.com/nightlife/xs-las-vegas) accepts a passport or Global Entry card from visitors outside the US and refuses photos or copies.

Pack a thin layer you can wear on the flight and then keep in your day bag. A wrap or a light overshirt does the job in summer, when the plane, the hotel lobby and the theater are all colder than the sidewalk.

## The checked bag: pool days, nights out and the walk between

### Shoes for the Strip

The Strip runs about 4.2 miles from Mandalay Bay to the STRAT, and the resorts are far bigger than they look on a map. Getting from one casino entrance to the next often means a pedestrian bridge, an escalator and a walk through a gaming floor and a shopping arcade. A weekend of casino hopping adds up to many miles.

On Reddit, in r/LasVegas, the shoe advice is consistent: map distances deceive, so bring the pair you would wear on a long city walk at home. The bridges mean stairs, the casino walkways are marble or tile, and sandals rub on hot pavement and slide on polished floors.

[![Skechers Summits Sneaker](https://33travels.com/wp-content/uploads/packing-guides/_products/B076THVK3X.webp)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076THVK3X?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=what-to-pack-for-las-vegas)

Strip walks add up to miles on hard floors and bridge stairs; a cushioned, washable slip-on takes the pressure off.

- Memory Foam cushioned insole
- Lightweight shock-absorbing midsole

[Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076THVK3X?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=what-to-pack-for-las-vegas)

I learned the distance problem on a July press trip in 2017. A dinner at the Venetian looked like a ten-minute walk from my hotel at the south end of the Strip; it was still 106°F at 6 p.m. and the walk took forty minutes through four casinos and two bridges.

### The pool

Pool season runs roughly March through October, and many resorts keep one heated pool open in winter (the [Las Vegas visitor bureau](https://www.visitlasvegas.com/experience/post/where-to-find-heated-pools-in-las-vegas-in-winter/) lists Bellagio, the Venetian and Circa among them). Pack two swimsuits for a pool-heavy trip, a cover-up for walking through the casino to the pool gate and flip-flops for the deck, which gets hot enough in June to burn bare feet.

Dayclubs such as Encore Beach Club are a separate event with their own rules. They are 21+, check ID, and their dress requirements change by event. Most expect proper swimwear and turn away very baggy or see-through outfits, so check the venue page the week you go.

Pool glare off white decks and water is intense from May to September. Polarized lenses cut most of it.

### What to wear in Las Vegas at night

Las Vegas has no dress code on the casino floor. You will see shorts at the craps tables at midnight. The rules start at the door of a nightclub or a fine-dining room.

XS, at Wynn, publishes the clearest code: business casual, dressy jeans and clean sneakers are fine, while torn or baggy clothes, tank tops, swimwear and visible chains are not. Other clubs set their own codes, and some are stricter about sneakers and shorts. Men do well with dark jeans or chinos and a collared shirt; women with a dress, jumpsuit or dressy separates. The common thread is shoes: flip-flops, slides and gym sneakers fail at most club doors.

[![Cole Haan Grand Crosscourt](https://33travels.com/wp-content/uploads/packing-guides/_products/B0C9SS3W9K.webp)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C9SS3W9K?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=what-to-pack-for-las-vegas)

Many nightclubs turn away flip-flops and athletic shoes; a clean leather court sneaker reads as dressy and still handles the walk.

- Lightweight with cushioned insole

One detail catches people out at XS. The club bans outside water bottles, perfume and cologne, eye drops, nasal sprays and selfie sticks, and its coat check charges a fee. Leave those in the room on club night.

## The day bag on the Strip

Keep the day bag small and zipped. The Strip sidewalks, bridges and casino walkways are crowded at all hours, and a crossbody worn in front keeps phone, cards and ID out of reach while leaving both hands free for a drink or a railing.

[![VADOO Anti-Theft Sling Bag](https://33travels.com/wp-content/uploads/packing-guides/_products/B07ZKJVJ9H.webp)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZKJVJ9H?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=what-to-pack-for-las-vegas)

Carry water from the morning on. The dry air hides how much you sweat, so dehydration builds before thirst shows up. Clark County bans open glass containers on Strip sidewalks, so an insulated plastic or steel bottle you refill in the room is the practical option.

[![Stanley Quencher 40 oz](https://33travels.com/wp-content/uploads/packing-guides/_products/B0CRMP3RQT.webp)](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CRMP3RQT?tag=33travels-20&ascsubtag=what-to-pack-for-las-vegas)

Summer highs hit 105 F and the air is dry; vacuum insulation keeps water cold on long Strip walks, and plastic travels fine where glass is banned.

From June to September the walk between resorts and the wait at a taxi line or pool shuttle are the hottest parts of the day. Cooling towels work well here because evaporation is fast in dry air. A neck fan helps in line, and the [travel fan guide](https://33travels.com/best-travel-fan/) covers the rechargeable options.

## What to pack for Las Vegas by month

### What to pack for Las Vegas in January

January is almost as cold as December, with a 59°F high and a 41°F low. Pack a warm coat, long pants, closed shoes and a scarf; the dry cold and wind at night feel colder than the number. CES fills the city on January 6-9, 2027, so business travelers need a blazer and shoes that can handle long convention-center halls.

### What to pack for Las Vegas in February

February warms only slightly, to 63°F by day and 44°F at night, and it is the wettest month at 0.8 inches. A water-resistant jacket covers both the rain and the cold, and the Red Rock trails are at their coolest for hiking.

### What to pack for Las Vegas in March

March brings 71°F afternoons and some of the windiest days of the year. Pack a light jacket that blocks wind, sunglasses and a hat with a strap. The first pools open, but the water and the evenings are still cool.

I found out about the wind at Red Rock Canyon in March 2015, when a gust at the Calico Hills overlook took my straw hat over the railing and into the sandstone below.

### What to pack for Las Vegas in April

April is mild, with highs near 79°F and lows near 57°F, and it is one of the best months for hiking and pools together. Pack shorts and T-shirts, one jacket for night and real sunscreen; the UV index climbs quickly from here on.

### What to pack for Las Vegas in May

May highs reach 89°F with almost no rain. Summer clothes, a sun hat and swimwear do the work. EDC runs on May 14-16 and May 21-23, 2027 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, which is exposed desert with dust and big temperature drops after midnight, so festival-goers need a layer and a bandana. From May 15, Valley of Fire closes most of its hiking trails for heat.

### What to pack for Las Vegas in June

June averages 99°F and close to zero rain. Pack the lightest fabrics you own, a wide-brim hat, sunglasses, an insulated bottle and electrolyte packets. Plan outdoor time for the morning, and carry the thin layer for the indoor cold.

### What to pack for Las Vegas in July

July is the hottest month, with a 105°F average high and nights around 82°F; heat warnings are common. Pack loose, light-colored clothes, flip-flops for the pool, cooling towels and a sun-blocking shirt for any time outside. Monsoon season starts, and short storms can bring flash floods to desert washes on day trips.

### What to pack for Las Vegas in August

August stays at 103°F by day and 81°F at night, with brief monsoon storms. Pack the same as July, plus a light shell for a cloudburst. Skip anything that needs ironing.

### What to pack for Las Vegas in September

September averages 95°F and still feels like summer by day. Pool season continues and the evenings are warm enough for short sleeves. Pack summer clothes and one light layer for late dinners.

### What to pack for Las Vegas in October

October runs from 81°F in the afternoon to 60°F after dark, warm enough for the pool and cool enough for Red Rock. Pack shorts and a light jacket. Red Rock Canyon’s Scenic Drive requires a timed-entry reservation from October 1, so book it before you pack the hiking shoes.

### What to pack for Las Vegas in November

November drops to 67°F by day and 47°F at night. Pack jeans, a sweater and a real jacket. The Formula 1 Grand Prix runs on Strip streets on November 19-21, 2026, and race nights are cold and windy in the grandstands, so race fans need a hat, gloves and a warm layer.

### What to pack for Las Vegas in December

December is the coldest month at night, with an average low of 40°F. Pack a warm coat, a scarf, closed shoes and moisturizer. The National Finals Rodeo (December 3-12, 2026) brings a wave of boots and Western wear to the city, and Valley of Fire closes completely from December 1 to 14.

## Day trips: Red Rock, Hoover Dam, Valley of Fire and the Grand Canyon

*Red sandstone at Valley of Fire State Park on a March morning*

Most visitors leave the Strip at least once, and each trip changes the bag.

**Red Rock Canyon** is 30 minutes west. The [Scenic Drive needs a timed-entry reservation](https://www.redrockcanyonlv.org/fees/) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. between October 1 and May 31. Trails are rocky with no shade, so wear trail shoes or sturdy sneakers, carry more water than you expect to drink and bring a hat with a strap for the wind.

**Hoover Dam and Lake Mead** are 45 minutes southeast. The [Bureau of Reclamation](https://www.usbr.gov/lc/hooverdam/service/) bans knives of any size inside its buildings, firearms and drones, and inspects bags. Bring a small bag and bottled water. The [National Park Service](https://www.nps.gov/lake/planyourvisit/safety.htm) tells Lake Mead visitors to carry at least a gallon of water per person per day.

**Valley of Fire** is an hour northeast. [Nevada State Parks](https://parks.nv.gov/parks/valley-of-fire) closes most of its trails from May 15 to September 30 because of heat, and the park closes entirely from December 1 to 14. Nevada State Parks warns that rideshare can leave visitors stranded there, so plan a car or a tour.

**The Grand Canyon** is two to two and a half hours away at the West Rim and about four and a half at the South Rim. The South Rim sits near 7,000 feet, and the [NPS](https://www.nps.gov/grca/learn/nature/weather.htm) puts its winter highs in the 40s and lows in the teens, so a December day trip needs a real coat, a hat and gloves even when the Strip is mild. Arizona does not use daylight saving time, so from November its clocks run an hour ahead of Las Vegas. Check tour pickup times twice.

## What to leave at home and the local rules

A few items take up space without earning it:

- **A hair dryer.** Strip hotel rooms almost always include one.
- **Glass bottles for the sidewalk.** Clark County bans open glass on the Strip; plastic cups are fine.
- **An umbrella.** The city averages about 4 inches of rain a year, and summer storms pass in under an hour.
- **Hiking boots, unless you plan a real hike.** Trail shoes cover Red Rock and Valley of Fire, and boots weigh down a carry-on.
- **A summer jacket from June to September.** July nights average 82°F. The only layer you need is for the indoor air conditioning.
- **Perfume and big bags on club night.** XS lists perfume as a banned item, and every club searches bags.

## Las Vegas packing FAQ

Do I need a swimsuit for Las Vegas in winter?

Yes, if your hotel has a heated pool or a spa. Several Strip resorts, including Bellagio and the Venetian, keep one heated pool open from November to February. Air temperatures sit in the 50s and low 60s by day, so lounging is cool, but a short swim in heated water is comfortable.

What should I wear to a Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas?

Smart casual is the norm at Strip shows. Jeans, a nice top or a collared shirt and clean shoes fit in at every Cirque show on the Strip. Bring a light layer: theaters are strongly air-conditioned in summer. If you go straight to a club after the show, dress for the club, since its door code is stricter than the theater's.

Is a fanny pack okay in Las Vegas?

Yes. Belt bags and fanny packs are common on the Strip and at pool decks, and they keep a phone and ID in front of you in crowds. For a nightclub, check the venue: clubs search every bag, and a small crossbody or clutch looks more at home with a night outfit. At Allegiant Stadium, only clear bags or a small clutch get through the gate.
