How we chose

We started from the bags named in the current travel and beauty roundups (Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, Allure, People, Byrdie, InStyle, Who What Wear, Cosmopolitan and Pack Hacker), the 76 Reddit threads we read and Amazon’s best sellers in makeup and toiletry bags. Every pick is sold on Amazon in the US. We checked each listing in October 2026 for price, size, weight, materials and compartments, and we kept bags with at least 1,000 ratings at 4.4 stars or better unless a roundup backs a newer or pricier model.

Each bag is scored for organization, capacity, packability, leak protection, durability and brush care, and for six kinds of trips: carry-on only, weekend, long trips, business travel, pro kits and skincare-heavy kits. The finder uses those scores. We did not test the bags ourselves; scores come from the listings, the roundups and owner reports.

Three of the most-recommended bags are not on this list because they are not sold on Amazon: the Béis Cosmetic Case, the Calpak Clear Cosmetic Case and the Dagne Dover Hunter Toiletry Bag. The Béis case appears in more roundups than any other makeup bag. Buy them from the brands directly if you want them.

We read 76 Reddit threads from 2020 to 2026 about makeup and toiletry bags for travel, 55 of them about makeup specifically, mostly in r/HerOneBag, r/onebag, r/MakeupAddiction and r/Sephora. Reddit recommends different bags than the roundups do. The Muji hanging case is named most often, followed by the Osprey Ultralight organizers and the Sea to Summit hanging bag. In makeup-only threads, the Parallelle case and small zip pencil cases come up again and again. Of the Reddit favorites, the Sea to Summit bag is the one sold on Amazon by its maker, which is why it is our Reddit pick.

Three patterns stand out. Carry-on-only travelers dislike bulk: “too big” is the most common complaint (45 threads), ahead of price (43) and leaks (29). Many of them carry two or three small pouches instead of one large bag. And Reddit treats the clear liquids bag as a separate item from the makeup bag, not a feature of it.

A makeup bag holds color cosmetics and brushes and is built for access: it opens flat or stands up, with slots for brushes and pockets for lipsticks. Compartments only help if they fit your products. Adjustable dividers suit a kit that changes from trip to trip; fixed pockets suit a kit that stays the same. If you carry fewer than ten items, a pouch with a few inner pockets is lighter and does the same job.

Makeup in a carry-on: TSA, UK and EU liquids rules

United States (TSA): liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in a carry-on must be 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less per container, and all of them must fit in one quart-size clear zip bag per passenger. For makeup, that covers liquid foundation, mascara, lip gloss, cream blush, concealer, setting spray, perfume, nail polish and makeup remover. Powder makeup, solid makeup, lipstick and makeup wipes are not limited in carry-on bags. Powders over 12 oz (350 ml) go in a separate bin for screening, which a normal compact or palette never reaches. In checked bags, makeup of any size is allowed.

PreCheck lanes and the new CT scanners at many US airports let you leave the quart bag inside your carry-on, but the 3.4 oz limit still applies.

United Kingdom: most UK airports still apply the 100 ml limit and ask for liquids in a single clear bag of about 1 liter (roughly 20 by 20 cm). As of October 2026, Heathrow, Gatwick, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Bristol and both Belfast airports allow containers up to 2 liters and no clear bag, while Manchester, Stansted, Luton and Glasgow do not. Check your departure airport and your return airport, since the rules can differ.

European Union: the standard rule is 100 ml per container in one transparent resealable bag of up to 1 liter. A few airports with the newest scanners allow more, but airport by airport and sometimes lane by lane. Pack for 100 ml unless every airport on your route, including the way home, says otherwise.

Aerosols in checked bags: dry shampoo, hairspray and setting spray are allowed up to 2 kg (70 oz) in total per person, with no single container over 500 ml (about 17 oz).
