Natal

The capital of Rio Grande do Norte state, Natal was founded on December 25, 1599, hence its name meaning “Christmas” in Portuguese. The city is known as the “City of the Sun” due to its sunny weather throughout the year. It features some of Brazil’s most famous urban beaches, including Ponta Negra, and is home to the largest cashew tree in the world. The city gained strategic importance during World War II when it served as an Allied Forces air base.

Niterói

Located across Guanabara Bay from Rio de Janeiro, Niterói was the capital of Rio de Janeiro state until 1975. The name comes from the indigenous Tupi language meaning “hidden water.” The city is famous for its Contemporary Art Museum, designed by Oscar Niemeyer, and consistently ranks among Brazil’s cities with the highest quality of life. It’s connected to Rio de Janeiro by the Rio-Niterói Bridge, one of the longest bridges in the Southern Hemisphere.

Nova Friburgo

Founded in 1818 as the first planned Swiss colony in Brazil, Nova Friburgo was named after the Swiss city of Fribourg. Located in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro state, it’s known for its cool climate, Germanic architecture, and lingerie industry. The city is also a popular destination for mountain climbing and ecological tourism.

Nova Iguaçu

One of the major cities in Rio de Janeiro’s metropolitan area, Nova Iguaçu began as a settlement called Maxambomba. The current name was adopted in 1916, meaning “New Iguaçu.” The city was historically important for its orange cultivation and exports. Today, it’s a significant commercial and residential center in the Baixada Fluminense region.

Nova Lima

Located in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, Nova Lima has a rich history tied to gold mining. Named after an influential Portuguese merchant, Augusto de Lima, the city maintains much of its colonial architecture. Today, it’s known for its high-end residential areas, environmental preservation, and continued mining activities.

Novo Hamburgo

Founded by German immigrants in the 19th century, Novo Hamburgo (“New Hamburg”) is located in Rio Grande do Sul’s metropolitan region. The city became known as the “National Capital of Shoes” due to its significant footwear industry, which developed from the leather-working traditions of its German settlers. Although the shoe industry has declined, the city maintains strong German cultural influences in its architecture, festivals, and cuisine.
