The best travel hair dryer for most people is the Conair 1875W Compact Folding: it has full home-dryer power, a manual 120/240 V switch for Europe, weighs about 1 lb and costs about $28. If you would rather not flip a switch, the Conair Worldwide Smart Voltage detects 125 V or 240 V by itself for about $37, and the Dyson Supersonic Travel is the premium pick at $299.99 with automatic 100-240 V.
Voltage decides more than brand or price. A dual-voltage dryer works almost anywhere with a plug adapter. A US-only dryer is fine for domestic trips and Japan, and it burns out in a 230 V socket. Four of the 12 picks below are US-only, and each one is labeled.
Quick answer: the Conair 1875W Compact Folding is the best overall pick. The Conair Worldwide Smart Voltage is the easiest dryer for Europe. The BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Travel is the smallest. The Curlsmith Defrizzion Travel is the pick for curly hair with a diffuser. The Conair 1600W Compact Folding is the budget pick at about $15.

Best travel hair dryer overall: Conair 1875W Compact Folding
This Conair puts a full 1875 W behind a folding handle for about $28. It has two heat and two speed settings, a cool shot and a concentrator, and it folds to about 19 cm. The 120/240 V switch is manual, so you set it once on arrival and there is no voltage-sensing circuit to fail. Wirecutter’s top travel pick is a Conair compact folding dual-voltage dryer, and Pack Hacker and Oyster list the same Conair line. It runs hot and loud and comes without a diffuser.
Best travel hair dryer overall
Conair Travel Hair Dryer, Dual-Voltage Compatibility, Folding Handle, 1875W
Best for: Travelers who want a full-power folding dryer that works in Europe and costs under $30.
A 1875 W folding dryer with a manual 120/240 V switch, about 1 lb, two heat and two speed settings and a cool shot. Wirecutter names a Conair compact folding dual-voltage dryer its best pick for most people, and Pack Hacker and Oyster list the same Conair compact line. Reviewers put drying time close to a full-size dryer; it runs hot and loud and has no diffuser.
- TypeCompact corded
- Weight454 g (16.0 oz)
- Folded19 cm
- Power1875 W
- VoltageDual voltage (switch)
- DiffuserNone
Voltage: Flip the 120/240 V switch on the dryer before plugging in abroad; the listing says it must be set to the local voltage first. Buy a plug adapter only, not a converter.
Pros
- 1875 W is the most power in a folding dryer at this price
- Manual voltage switch, no electronics to fail abroad
- Folds to about 19 cm and weighs about 1 lb
- Cool shot and concentrator included
Cons
- Loud, comparable to a full-size dryer per Pack Hacker
- Runs hot (about 180 F in Pack Hacker timing), little heat control
- No diffuser
- You must flip the switch yourself before plugging in abroad
1875 W, 2 heat / 2 speed, cool shot, concentrator, folding handle, about 1 lb, 6 ft cord per listing. Dual voltage by manual switch (listing: set the correct voltage before use; plug adapter needed, no converter).

Best dual voltage travel hair dryer for Europe: Conair Worldwide Smart Voltage
The Worldwide detects 125 V or 240 V by itself and shows the result on an LED: green at 125 V, blue at 240 V. That removes the most common way to ruin a travel dryer, which is forgetting the switch. Pack Hacker ranks it first for dual-voltage use and Glamour names it the best budget pick. It is also the only dual-voltage dryer under $50 here that comes with a diffuser. The trade-offs are size (about 27 cm folded), heat and a young Amazon listing with 35 reviews.
Best automatic dual voltage travel hair dryer
Conair 1875W Worldwide Travel Hair Dryer - Dual Voltage, Folding Handle, Ionic Technology
Best for: Anyone who does not want to remember a voltage switch before every European hotel stay.
Smart Voltage detects 125 V or 240 V by itself and shows green or blue on an LED. Pack Hacker ranks it first for dual-voltage use and Glamour names it best budget. It is one of the bigger travel dryers, and this listing has only 35 reviews because it is a newer listing of an older product.
- TypeCompact corded
- Weight545 g (19.2 oz)
- Folded27 cm
- Power1875 W
- VoltageDual voltage (automatic)
- DiffuserIncluded
Voltage: Detects the voltage on its own (LED shows green at 125 V, blue at 240 V). It still needs a plug adapter for European sockets; it is not a voltage converter.
Pros
- No manual switch: detects 125 V or 240 V by itself
- 1875 W, 3 heat / 2 speed, cool shot, ionic
- Concentrator and diffuser included
Cons
- Larger than other travel dryers (about 27 cm folded per Pack Hacker)
- Runs very hot per Glamour, nozzle stays hot after use
- Only 35 reviews on this Amazon listing
- Still needs a plug adapter in Europe
1875 W, Smart Voltage 125 V / 240 V with LED, 3 heat / 2 speed, cool shot, ionic, concentrator + diffuser, folding handle, about 1.2 lb per listing. Cord length not stated; 1.5 m is an estimate from sister Conair models.

Best mini hair dryer for travel: BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Travel
At about 0.4 lb, the BaBylissPRO is the smallest corded dryer in this guide that still dries thick hair at speed: Pack Hacker timed thick hair at about six minutes. A tab on the front switches it to 250 V. It is also the most repeated true travel dryer in the Reddit threads we read, with owners using it in Europe, Iceland and Japan. The catch is heat. Pack Hacker measured a peak near 200°F, and it has no cool shot and no heat setting.
Best mini folding travel hair dryer
BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Travel Hair Dryer, 1000 Watt, Foldable Handle, Dual Voltage
Best for: Carry-on-only packers who want the smallest dryer that still dries thick hair quickly.
About 0.4 lb with a folding handle and a switch for 120/250 V. Pack Hacker calls it one of the smallest dryers it handled and timed thick hair at about six minutes, but it measured peak heat near 200 F. There is no cool shot or separate heat setting.
- TypeFolding mini
- Weight181 g (6.4 oz)
- Folded23 cm
- Power1000 W
- VoltageDual voltage (switch)
- DiffuserNone
Voltage: Switch the voltage tab on the dryer to 250 V before plugging in abroad; plug adapter only, no converter. Pack Hacker and the listing both describe the manual switch. One Amazon reviewer reports both speeds work only on the 250 V setting.
Pros
- About 0.4 lb and 9 in folded, among the smallest in roundups
- Dries thick hair fast per Pack Hacker
- Dual voltage switch, nano titanium ionic
Cons
- Runs very hot (about 200 F peak in Pack Hacker timing)
- No cool shot, no heat setting, only high/low speed
- Concentrator fits loosely, no diffuser
1000 W, folding handle, dual voltage switch, concentrator, 5 ft cord, 0.4 lb (181 g) per listing; Oyster lists an older BaBylissPRO travel model at 15.5 oz, so treat weight as approximate.

Best Dyson travel hair dryer: Dyson Supersonic Travel
Dyson launched the Supersonic Travel in April 2026 at $299.99. It weighs 330 g, adapts to anything from 100 to 240 V with no switch and measures air temperature more than 100 times a second. TechRadar dried fine, mid-length curly hair in about four minutes and expects thick or long hair to take longer, because airflow is lower than the full-size Supersonic. It does not fold and ships with one attachment. The full verdict is in Is the Dyson travel hair dryer worth it? below.
Best Dyson travel hair dryer
Dyson Supersonic Travel Hair Dryer

Best Dyson alternative for fine hair: ghd Flight+
The ghd Flight+ is the only dual-voltage alternative to the Dyson that the roundups back. Glamour ranks it best overall, and TechRadar names it as the cheaper option in its Dyson Travel review. It folds flat, comes with a travel case and costs about $110. A dial in the handle sets 120 V or 240 V and needs a coin to turn, so it cannot flip by accident in a bag. TechRadar found it slow, about eight minutes on long fine hair, and better suited to fine hair than thick.

ghd Flight+ Travel Hair Dryer, Black
Best for: Fine or medium hair, a dual-voltage dryer with a case, and a budget under Dyson.

Best budget travel hair dryer: Conair 1600W Compact Folding
Pack Hacker’s budget buy costs about $15, weighs 0.75 lb and has about 23,800 Amazon reviews, the most of any pick here. It dried thin hair in 5.5 minutes in Pack Hacker’s timing, was about as loud as a full-size dryer, and the fold saves little space. Reviewers say it ships set to 120 V. One section of the Amazon page mentions automatic conversion while another describes the switch, so look for the switch on the front when it arrives and set it before your first plug-in abroad.

Best travel hair dryer for curly hair, with diffuser: Curlsmith Defrizzion Travel
The Curlsmith is the only travel dryer here built around a diffuser: a 6-inch bowl ships in the box with a pick and a nozzle, and it is dual voltage. Glamour names it best for curly hair, and its tester found it never got too hot. It is slow, though. The same tester stopped after 20 minutes with the roots still damp. It weighs 465 g, draws 1200 W and costs about $139. Neither Curlsmith nor Amazon says whether the voltage change is a switch or automatic, so read the handle and the manual before your first plug-in abroad.
Best travel hair dryer for curly hair with a diffuser

Best for: Curly and wavy hair that needs a real diffuser on the road.
Glamour names it best for curly hair: dual voltage, foldable, a 6 in diffuser, three heat and two speed settings, far-infrared heat. Its tester found it never got too hot, but drying was slow: 20 minutes without finishing the roots. Curlsmith lists 1200 W and 465 g.

Best low-heat travel hair dryer for fine hair: Panasonic nanoe Compact
Pack Hacker measured a top temperature of 147°F on the Panasonic nanoe, the lowest in its roundup, against roughly 180°F to 200°F for the Conair and BaBylissPRO dryers. Wirecutter picks a related compact nanoe model (EH-NA2C) for frizz-prone and color-treated hair. An oscillating nozzle spreads the airflow, and Pack Hacker timed thick hair at about 8:40. It is 125 V only, so it suits North American trips and Japan, never Europe. Pack Hacker also describes a loud helicopter whine.
Best low-heat travel hair dryer for fine hair
Panasonic nanoe Compact Hair Dryer, 1400W, Folding Handle and Quickdry Nozzle
Best for: Fine, frizz-prone or color-treated hair on trips within North America.

- TypeCompact corded
- Weightn/a
- Folded23 cm
- Power1400 W
- VoltageUS only (120 V)

Cons
- 125 V only, not for Europe or Asia

Lightest mini hair dryer for US trips: Dreame Pocket
The Dreame Pocket weighs 0.66 lb, folds and uses a 110,000 rpm brushless motor with a diffuser in the box, for about $95. Glamour named it the most lightweight dryer in its roundup and found it strong enough for long wavy hair, though it has only two speeds. Dreame claims under 60 dB. That is a manufacturer figure with no independent measurement behind it. This Amazon version is 120 V only, and the listing says so. The dual-voltage Dreame Pocket Pro is a different product and is not sold on Amazon US.
Lightest mini hair dryer for US trips
Dreame Pocket Hair Dryer 2026 - Lightweight Foldable Blow Dryer with Diffuser, 300M Negative Ions, Low Noise
Best for: Light packers on US-voltage trips who care about noise and weight.
A 0.66 lb foldable 110,000 rpm dryer with a diffuser. The listing claims under 60 dB from six-layer acoustic insulation; that is a manufacturer figure, not a measurement, and TechRadar measured the Dyson Travel at 83-87 dB. Glamour named it most lightweight but noted only two speeds. This Amazon version is 120 V only.
- TypeHigh-speed
- Weight300 g (10.6 oz)
- Folded20 cm
- Powern/a
- VoltageUS only (120 V)

Pros
- 0.66 lb, folds
- Under 60 dB claimed on the listing

Best cordless hair dryer for travel: YALICE Cordless 15000mAh
No cordless hair dryer has a strong track record yet. The YALICE is the most complete option we found: a 15000 mAh battery, an LCD, three heat modes and magnetic USB charging, for about $140. It has 13 Amazon reviews and no roundup coverage, which is thin evidence. A battery cannot match a wall socket, so it suits touch-ups, camping, the gym and rooms without a free outlet, not a full dry of thick hair. The battery works out to about 55.5 Wh, well under the 100 Wh airline limit.
Cordless pick (few reviews yet)
YALICE Rechargeable Cordless Hair Dryer with LCD Display, 15000mAh Battery, Plasma Technology
Best for: Touch-ups, camping, gym or rooms with no free socket; not a full-drying tool.
A rechargeable 15000 mAh cordless dryer with an LCD, two speeds and three heat modes (hot, warm, cool). Cordless dryers are weaker than corded ones and reviews are mixed on heat. It suits quick drying and touch-ups, not thick hair. Charges by magnetic USB cable, so the dryer has no voltage switch; only the charger input matters abroad.
- TypeCordless
- Weightn/a
- Powern/a
- VoltageUS only (120 V)
- DiffuserNone
Voltage: The dryer runs on its battery. Only the charger touches mains power: check that the charger or power brick is rated 100-240 V before charging abroad.
Pros
- No cord, no voltage switch on the dryer itself
- Rechargeable over USB
- LCD shows speed and heat
Cons
- Weaker than corded dryers, limited runtime
- Only 13 Amazon reviews, so weak evidence
- Lithium battery: carry-on rules apply
- Weight not stated in the sources reviewed
15000 mAh battery (about 55.5 Wh at a nominal 3.7 V; the listing gives mAh, not Wh), 2 speeds, 3 heat modes, LCD, magnetic charging, package weight 2.76 lb.

Is the Dyson travel hair dryer worth it?
The Dyson Supersonic Travel is worth $299.99 if you travel often, have fine to medium hair and want one dryer that works on every continent without a switch. For an occasional trip, or for thick and long hair, a $28 Conair or the $110 ghd Flight+ does the job for far less.
- Voltage: automatic from 100 to 240 V, per Dyson. You need only a plug adapter, and there is no switch to forget.
- Weight and size: 330 g without the cord and 22 cm long. Dyson says it is 32% smaller and 25% lighter than the full-size Supersonic. It does not fold and has no travel case in the box.
- Drying speed: TechRadar dried fine, mid-length curly hair in about four minutes. Airflow is lower than the full-size Dyson, and TechRadar expects thick or long hair to take noticeably longer.
- Noise: TechRadar measured 83 to 87 dB, comparable to or quieter than a wall-mounted hotel dryer. It is not a quiet dryer.
- Power and attachments: 1,000 to 1,220 W, three heat settings, two airflow settings and a cool shot. Only the styling concentrator is in the box. Supersonic attachments fit and are sold separately, including the diffuser.
- Value: TechRadar scores its value 3 out of 5 and says it makes sense mainly for frequent travelers.
Buy it if you fly abroad several times a year, already own Supersonic attachments or want the lightest corded dryer that handles every voltage. Skip it if you have thick or long hair, travel once a year or need a diffuser in the box.
The cheaper options split by voltage. The ghd Flight+ at about $110 is the only dual-voltage alternative with roundup backing, and it adds a fold and a case the Dyson lacks. The Shark SpeedStyle Pro Flex and the Dreame Pocket copy the Dyson’s high-speed motor for $95 to $169, but both are 120 V only. Take them on domestic trips and leave them at home for Europe.
Best hair dryer for women at home and on the road
Most people want one dryer that does the daily blowout at home and still fits in the car or a checked bag. For that job, the Conair InfinitiPRO 1875W is the best value: full power, a diffuser and a concentrator, 4.6 stars on about 23,000 reviews and a price near $35. The Shark SpeedStyle Pro Flex is the upgrade, with a high-velocity motor, a heat-capped Scalp Shield mode and a folding handle for about $169.
Both are 120 V only. If your trips include Europe or Asia, one dual-voltage dryer has to do both jobs. The Conair Worldwide Smart Voltage comes closest: 1875 W, three heat settings, a diffuser and automatic 125/240 V for about $37. The Dyson Supersonic Travel covers the same ground with lighter weight and less power.
Best travel hair dryer for curly hair with a diffuser
Curly hair needs a diffuser and a low-speed, moderate-heat setting, so pick by what ships in the box. The Curlsmith Defrizzion Travel has the largest diffuser and the gentlest heat of the dual-voltage picks. The Conair Worldwide Smart Voltage is the cheaper dual-voltage dryer with a diffuser. For US trips, the InfinitiPRO, the Shark and the Dreame Pocket all include one.

Six of the 30 Reddit threads we read suggest a lighter option: pack a universal silicone or sock-style diffuser and use the hotel dryer. It saves the most bag space and avoids the voltage question, but the same threads warn that “universal” diffusers do not fit every nozzle. Measure your home dryer’s nozzle and check the diffuser’s range before you rely on it abroad.
Best travel hair dryer for fine hair
Fine hair dries fast and burns easily, so heat control matters more than wattage. The Panasonic nanoe Compact peaked at 147°F in Pack Hacker’s timing, the lowest measured, but it is 125 V only. Abroad, the ghd Flight+ and the Dyson Supersonic Travel are the dual-voltage choices: TechRadar found the ghd suits fine hair better than thick, and the Dyson dried fine hair in about four minutes. Avoid the BaBylissPRO if your hair is fine and damaged, since it peaked near 200°F with no heat setting.
Will my hair dryer work in Europe?
A US hair dryer works in Europe only if it is dual voltage. Europe runs at 230 V and 50 Hz, about twice the US 120 V. A dual-voltage dryer needs only a plug adapter. A US-only dryer plugged into a European socket through an adapter can burn out the moment it is plugged in, and a voltage converter is rarely strong enough to save it.

Adapter vs converter
A plug adapter changes the shape of the pins and nothing else. Conair’s own converter manual says it plainly: adapter plugs alone do not convert voltage. A converter does change the voltage, but the largest common travel converter, Conair’s TravelSmart set, is rated up to 1,875 W on its high setting for about 30 minutes at a time. That is exactly the draw of a full-power dryer, with no margin. Cheaper converters are often rated lower. The safe setup is a dual-voltage dryer plus an adapter, with no converter in the chain.
Set the switch before you plug in
Four picks change voltage by hand: the two Conair compacts and the BaBylissPRO by a switch and the ghd by a coin-turned dial. The Curlsmith is dual voltage, but its listings do not say whether it switches by hand or by itself. On a manual model, set the switch to 240 V (marked 250 V on some models) before the first plug-in. A heating element left on 120 V and fed 230 V tries to draw roughly four times its rated power, because heat rises with the square of the voltage. The reverse mistake, 240 V on a US socket, is safe but gives about a quarter of the heat.
Automatic dryers remove the step. The Dyson Supersonic Travel adapts anywhere from 100 to 240 V, and the Conair Worldwide detects 125 V or 240 V and shows it on an LED.
UK bathrooms have shaver-only sockets
UK bathrooms normally have no general-purpose sockets. The only outlet you are likely to find there is a shaver socket, which is built for electric razors and cannot run a 1,000 W-plus dryer. Plan to dry your hair in the bedroom, and pack a Type G adapter for the UK and Ireland. Most of continental Europe takes Type C or F, Italy adds Type L, and France and Belgium use Type E.
Japan runs at 100 V
Japan uses 100 V with Type A sockets, the same two flat pins as the US. A US dryer fits and runs, at about 69% of its rated power, so an 1875 W dryer behaves like one of about 1,300 W. Set a switch model to its 120 V position. The Dyson handles 100 V by design. Conair states the Worldwide’s range as 125 V or 240 V, so its behavior at exactly 100 V is not documented.

Best travel hair dryer according to Reddit
We read 30 Reddit threads through a public archive, mostly in r/curlyhair (13) and r/onebag (8), with the rest from r/ItalyTravel, r/dyson, r/digitalnomad, r/HerOneBag, r/longhair and r/TwoXChromosomes. The full-size Dyson Supersonic appears in 15 threads and Shark in 10, mostly as home dryers. Among true travel dryers, the 1875 W Conair (4 threads) and the BaBylissPRO travel dryer (3) come up most. Laifen and Ella Bella posts followed a promotion pattern, and r/onebag moderators removed Laifen posts as shilling, so we did not count them.
The practical advice was more consistent than the product picks:
- Buy dual voltage, set it before plugging in, then use only an adapter (10 threads).
- An adapter changes the pins, not the voltage (8 threads), and a US-only dryer on an adapter burns out or runs weak (6).
- Hotels and B&Bs usually have a dryer (7 threads), though some are missing or weak (4).
- Look for a real low setting and a cool shot (6 threads).
- A cheap Conair or Revlon is enough (6 threads), and for short trips many skip the dryer entirely (6).
- A folding handle saves less space than expected once the cord is counted (4 threads).
The sample leans toward curly hair and one-bag travel, and several large travel subreddits could not be searched. Counts are threads, not votes.
What Reddit recommends
We read 30 Reddit threads on travel hair dryers (collected 2026-10-06) and counted which dryers came up. Paraphrased, no usernames.
- 1Dyson Supersonic (full-size)Not in our picks15 threads
The most-named dryer in the sample, mostly in r/curlyhair. Owners say it dries faster and with less frizz than their old dryer, and many call it worth saving for; a few say a Shark or a cheaper dryer gives the same result. The travel threads add a warning: a US-voltage Dyson does not belong behind a converter.
- 2Shark HyperAIR and FlexStyleNot in our picks10 threads
Shark HyperAIR and FlexStyle come up as the cheaper Dyson answer. Curly-hair posters say it dries long hair in about 20 to 30 minutes with a diffuser; some find it too hot even on low and press the cool shot. In the travel threads a long-rod Shark is praised because it packs more easily than a folding dryer.
- 3Universal silicone diffuser for a hotel dryerNot in our picks6 threads
A common workaround: bring a silicone or sock-style universal diffuser and use the hotel dryer. Posters warn that universal diffusers do not always fit and tell buyers to check the nozzle size.
- 4Revlon dryers and One-Step brushNot in our picks5 threads
Revlon shows up two ways: the One-Step brush that people with US voltage cannot take to Italy, and cheap 1875 W dryers. One Italy poster says a Revlon with an adapter ran very hot yet had no power; another says a dual-voltage look-alike worked in Italy.
The 1875 W dual-voltage Conair folding dryer is the budget answer: about $30 at Target, folds into a carry-on, low/high plus cool shot. One poster calls it a bit bigger than the popular 1000 W mini. Several of the long Conair Worldwide reviews in the HerOneBag thread read like promotional copy and are not weighted.
The default budget diffuser dryer in r/curlyhair: owners say it works, lasts years and is much cheaper than Dyson or Shark. Complaints are the diffuser fit being tight and holes that let long hair through for one worried buyer, answered with no problem. It is a US-voltage full-size dryer, not a travel model.
The most repeated true travel dryer in the sample (r/HerOneBag, r/onebag). A stylist and several owners call it small, folding and surprisingly strong for about $35-40, and report using it in Europe, Iceland and Japan. Complaints are no cold shot, a bit hot, and an occasional cut-out reported by one owner abroad.
Two 2026 r/onebag replies from owners (second-hand reports): one says a spouse will not leave home without it, the other says it won a spouse over after two short trips. No hands-on detail beyond that, and no price talk.
Show all 10
Two 2022 posts celebrate the full-size Curlsmith diffuser dryer for curls (the travel edition is newer and is not discussed). Owners like the temperature settings and the diffuser; price was about $190-200 and one buyer called it better than Dyson.
One HerOneBag reply likes the Panasonic nanoe travel dryer over a pricier T3 travel dryer.
Tips that keep coming up
- Buy a dual-voltage dryer with a 120/240 V switch (or auto 100-240 V) and set it before plugging in abroad; then only a plug adapter is needed 10 threads
- A plug adapter changes the pin shape only, not the voltage 8 threads
- Hotels and B&Bs usually have a dryer; check the listing or ask before packing 7 threads
- Adapters, outlets and converters must cope with the dryer wattage; the heavy-duty ones are bigger and heavier 6 threads
- A US-only dryer on an adapter alone burns out or runs weak abroad; two posters were told to sell or rebuy a Dyson instead 6 threads
- Use a universal diffuser attachment with the hotel dryer instead of packing a dryer; check the fit first 6 threads
- Look for a real low setting and a cool shot, not just hot and hurricane 6 threads
- A cheap Conair or Revlon dryer is enough; the Dyson price is not needed for good results 6 threads
- For short trips skip the dryer: microfiber towel, ponytail, hat 6 threads
- Hotel dryers can be missing, weak or hit-or-miss, so people with demanding hair bring their own 4 threads
- Converters change voltage but not frequency, so motors in dryers can run slow or fussy on 50 Hz 4 threads
- Very small dual-voltage dryers are weak; pick one with a few attachments and enough wattage 4 threads
- A folding handle saves less space than expected; overall bulk and cord matter, and a slim fixed shape can pack as well 4 threads
- Buy a cheap dryer locally at the destination instead of carrying one 3 threads
- Thick hair wants about 1800 W or more; low-wattage travel dryers take far longer 2 threads

Can you bring a hair dryer on a plane?
Yes. The TSA allows corded hair dryers in both carry-on and checked bags, and the final decision rests with the officer at the checkpoint. A corded dryer has no battery, so no FAA battery rule applies to it.
Cordless dryers are different because they carry a lithium-ion battery. The FAA’s PackSafe guidance says devices with lithium batteries should go in carry-on bags. If one goes in checked baggage, it must be fully powered off and protected from switching on. Batteries up to 100 Wh need no airline approval, 101 to 160 Wh need approval and anything above 160 Wh cannot fly on a passenger plane. The YALICE lists 15000 mAh, which works out to about 55.5 Wh at a nominal 3.7 V. Check the Wh figure printed on the unit, and never fly a damaged or recalled battery.

In a carry-on, pack the dryer with the cord wrapped loosely around the folded body and the plug adapter in the same pouch so they travel together. Our packing list generator adds the dryer and the right adapter to a list for your destination. For the flight itself, see our guide to the best travel pillow.
How we chose
We did not test these dryers. The ranking comes from research. We read the specs and listing text for each Amazon product, the roundups from Pack Hacker, Glamour, TechRadar, T3, Oyster and Expert Reviews, the manufacturer pages from Dyson, ghd, Curlsmith and Panasonic, plus 30 Reddit threads. Wirecutter’s picks come from search summaries, since its pages could not be read in full. We scored each dryer from 0 to 3 for speed, gentleness, noise, packability, blowouts and fine, thick and curly hair. Each score traces to a measured time or temperature, a construction detail or a reported experience.
Voltage facts come from the listings and manufacturer pages, plug and mains data from Wikipedia’s mains electricity table, carry-on rules from the TSA and the FAA, and the converter limits from Conair’s TravelSmart manual. We checked Amazon availability, ratings and review counts on 2026-10-06, and prices change often. If you buy through our links, we earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best travel hair dryer?
The Conair 1875W Compact Folding is the best travel hair dryer for most people. It has full 1875 W power, a manual 120/240 V switch for Europe and a folding handle, and it costs about $28. The Conair Worldwide Smart Voltage switches voltage by itself for about $37, and the Dyson Supersonic Travel is the premium pick at $299.99.
Do I need a dual-voltage hair dryer for Europe?
Yes. Europe runs at 230 V and a US dryer is built for 120 V. A dual-voltage dryer set to 240 V, or one that adapts automatically, needs only a plug adapter. A US-only dryer on a plug adapter overheats and can burn out the moment it is plugged in.
Can I use a voltage converter with a hair dryer?
It is a poor idea. Conair's largest travel converter is rated up to 1,875 W on its high setting for about 30 minutes at a time, which leaves no margin for a full-power dryer, and cheaper converters are often rated lower. A dual-voltage dryer with a plug adapter is safer, lighter and cheaper.
Can I use my US hair dryer in Japan?
Yes. Japan uses 100 V and Type A sockets, so a US plug fits without an adapter. The dryer runs at about 69% of its rated power, so expect weaker heat and slower drying. Set a dual-voltage switch to its 120 V position.
Can I use a hair dryer in a UK hotel bathroom?
Usually not. UK bathrooms normally have no general-purpose sockets, and the shaver socket found there is built for electric razors, not a 1,000 W-plus dryer. Dry your hair in the bedroom and bring a Type G plug adapter.
Can you take a hair dryer in carry-on luggage?
Yes. The TSA allows corded hair dryers in carry-on and checked bags, and the officer at the checkpoint makes the final call. Corded dryers carry no battery, so no battery limits apply.
Can you bring a cordless hair dryer on a plane?
Yes, preferably in your carry-on. The FAA says devices with lithium batteries should travel in the cabin, and any in checked bags must be fully off and protected from switching on. Batteries up to 100 Wh need no approval and 101 to 160 Wh need airline approval. Check the Wh rating on the dryer.
Is the Dyson Supersonic Travel worth it?
It is worth $299.99 for frequent travelers with fine to medium hair who want automatic 100-240 V and a 330 g dryer. TechRadar dried fine curly hair in about four minutes but expects thick or long hair to take longer, and it scored the value 3 out of 5. The ghd Flight+ is the cheaper dual-voltage alternative at about $110.
Do hotels in Europe have hair dryers?
Most do. In the 30 Reddit threads we read, seven say hotels and B&Bs usually provide one and four warn that some are missing or weak. Check the listing or ask the hotel. If your hair needs a diffuser or a low heat setting, bring your own dryer or a universal diffuser.
