The first time I flew down from New York for a January weekend, I packed for July. A cold front came through on the Saturday, Ocean Drive sat near 55°F after dark, and I ended the night in a sweatshirt from a Collins Avenue souvenir shop.
That is the whole problem with deciding what to pack for Miami: the city runs two climates. From December to April it is dry and mild, with nights that can turn cool. From late May to mid-October it is hot, humid and wet, with a thunderstorm most afternoons and hurricane season in the background. Pick the month first and the list follows.
What to pack for Miami: the short answer
The best months are November through April, when highs sit between 76°F and 84°F, rain falls on 6 to 9 days a month and the humidity drops. The item that changes most is the outer layer. In winter it is a thin sweater or jacket for cold-front evenings and air-conditioned restaurants. In summer it is a packable rain shell or a pocket umbrella for the 3 p.m. storm.
Everything else stays the same year round: swimwear, linen or other breathable clothes, sandals plus one pair of walking shoes, sunscreen and a hat. Find your month in the table below, then jump to its section.

| Mar | 81 / 27 | 66 / 19 | 6 | Beach-ready days, sun hat; light layer at night |
| Apr | 84 / 29 | 70 / 21 | 7 | Swimwear, linen, sandals; add rain shell |
| May | 87 / 31 | 73 / 23 | 11 | Hot and humid; breathable fabrics, compact umbrella |
| Jun | 89 / 32 | 76 / 24 | 18 | Quick-dry everything; rain jacket, reef shoes |
| Jul | 91 / 33 | 78 / 26 | 17 | Lightest clothes, swimwear; storm-proof bag |
| Aug | 91 / 33 | 78 / 26 | 19 | Lightest clothes, swimwear; storm-proof bag |
| Sep | 89 / 32 | 77 / 25 | 18 | Quick-dry layers; rain jacket, flexible plans |
| Oct | 86 / 30 | 74 / 23 | 14 | Still hot; light rain shell, mosquito repellent |

| Dec | 78 / 26 | 64 / 18 | 8 | Mild days, cool nights; light jacket and long pants |
Two dates drive the table. The National Weather Service in Miami puts the median start of the wet season on May 21 and its end on October 17. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and its climatological peak falls on September 10.

Winter in Miami: December, January and February
This is the dry season and the busiest stretch of the year. Highs stay in the upper 70s. Nights drop into the low 60s, and several times a season a cold front pushes through with wind, a band of rain and a few cool days behind it.
What to pack for Miami in December
December averages a high of 78°F and a low of 64°F, with 8 rain days. Sea water is around 77°F.
Art Basel Miami Beach takes over the first week of the month (December 4-6 in 2026), with the main fair at the Miami Beach Convention Center and satellite fairs and galleries across Miami Beach, Wynwood and the Design District. When I covered the fair in 2019, I walked about 25,000 steps a day between the convention center and the tents, and the flat leather sandals I had packed were done by day two. Bring cushioned walking shoes for Basel week and keep the sandals for the evenings.
Pack:
- one pair of long pants or a midi skirt for cool evenings and outdoor dinners;
- a light jacket or overshirt;
- swimwear, because beach days are still normal;
- one smarter outfit if you have holiday dinners or gallery openings.
What to pack for Miami in January
January is the coolest month, with a 76°F high and a 61°F low. Behind a strong front, lows can fall into the 50s and the wind off the water makes South Beach feel colder than the number. Midday sun still burns: the UV index rarely drops below 4.
The Orange Bowl game is in mid-January (January 14 in 2027) at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, about 20 miles north of South Beach.
Newchoice Lightweight CardiganBudget
Restaurants, museums and Metrorail run cold AC, and January cold fronts drop lows into the 50s F; a thin layer is enough.
- Soft viscose knit with open front and long sleeves
- Machine washable, easy to layer over tanks and tees
Pack:
- a thin sweater or cardigan for each evening, plus long pants;
- closed shoes for the cooler nights;
- shorts and swimwear for the warm afternoons that follow each front.

What to pack for Miami in February
February is one of the driest months and the least humid: 78°F highs, 63°F lows and 6 rain days. Fronts still bring the odd windy evening. The sea is near 75°F, fine for a quick dip and too cool for a long snorkel without a rash guard.
Pack as for January, with one less warm layer.
Spring in Miami: March, April and May
Spring is when the UV index rises fast, and from about mid-May the rain returns.
What to pack for Miami in March
Highs reach 81°F with 6 rain days. March is spring break, the Miami Open tennis tournament (March 14-28 in 2027) and Ultra Music Festival at Bayfront Park in late March.
During spring break, the City of Miami Beach runs entry checkpoints and extra rules at the Ocean Drive beach entrances on Thursday-to-Sunday weekends, and only a handful of streets stay open as access points. The rules change every year, so check the city’s page the week you travel.
Sargassum, the brown seaweed that washes up in mats, starts to arrive in March. It smells of rotten eggs as it decays, crews rake it daily, and the city advises keeping fresh cuts out of the water.
FURTALK Wide-Brim HatMid-range
South Beach has little shade and the sun is strong from March; a brim covers face and neck, and the strap helps in sea wind.
- Wide brim of about 4.7 inches with adjustable chin strap
- Folds flat to fit a beach bag or suitcase
What to pack for Miami in April
April brings 84°F highs, 7 rain days and the first sticky evenings. Sargassum builds through the month, and spring is when lifeguards fly the purple flag for Portuguese man-of-war. Beached ones still sting, so keep sandals on along the tide line.
Mosquitoes return with the humidity, and the Everglades gets the worst of them.
Sun Bum SPF 50 LotionBudget
Summer UV index hits 10-11 and even January midday sun burns, so reapply on every beach day.
- Water-resistant SPF 50 lotion with UVA/UVB protection
- Oil-free, non-comedogenic, with vitamin E

What to pack for Miami in May
May is the hinge month. The first half is usually dry. The second half brings 87°F highs, 11 rain days and the first afternoon thunderstorms with frequent lightning.
The Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix runs in early May (April 30 to May 2 in 2027) at Hard Rock Stadium, and Miami Swim Week follows in late May. Both mean full days outdoors in May heat. Pack a hat, a refillable bottle, sunscreen you can reapply with sandy hands and a rain shell for the late afternoon.
Summer in Miami: June to September
From June to September the normal low never drops below 76°F and it rains on 17 to 19 days a month. The rain comes in a pattern: a clear, hot morning, clouds building after lunch, a heavy storm in mid-afternoon and a steamy, clear evening. Plan beach time for the morning and museums for the afternoon.
Lightning is the main danger, and the open sand is the worst place to wait out a storm.
What to pack for Miami in June
June is the wettest month by total rainfall, about 10.5 inches. Sargassum peaks in June and July, and sea turtles nest on the beaches from May to October, so you may see staked-off nests in the sand.
totes Auto-Open Travel UmbrellaMid-range
Wet season (about mid-May to mid-Oct) brings storms most afternoons; they pass fast, so a pocket umbrella covers the walk.
- One-handed auto open with a 43-inch canopy
- Folds down to about 11 inches
Pack:
- quick-dry shirts and shorts, since cotton stays damp for a day;
- a pocket umbrella or a rain shell, not both;
- sandals you can walk through a flooded crosswalk in;
- a zip bag for your phone and passport.
What to pack for Miami in July
July and August share the year’s highest normal: 91°F, with lows of 78°F. The UV index reaches 10 to 11 at midday. Long sleeves in a sun fabric beat reapplying lotion on a boat or a kayak.
Sea water reaches 85°F.
Columbia PFG UPF 50 ShirtMid-range
Midday UV in Jun-Aug is very high to extreme; long sleeves beat sunscreen on boat days and Everglades trips.
- Built-in UPF 50 sun protection
- Quick-dry, moisture-wicking polyester interlock
What to pack for Miami in August
August has the most rain days of the year, 19 on average. On an August press trip in 2016, a 3 p.m. storm in Wynwood soaked my canvas tote and the notebook inside it in about five minutes. The next day everything went into a zip dry bag, and the storm arrived on schedule again.
JOTO Waterproof Phone PouchBudget
Boat trips, Biscayne snorkeling and sudden downpours put phones at risk; sand and spray also ruin charging ports.
- IPX8 waterproof for up to 100 feet; fits phones up to 7 inches
- Clear window on both sides for photos
Heat is the other half of August. Walking even half a mile at 2 p.m. in Brickell or Little Havana soaks a shirt. Humidity plus long walks in shorts or a dress means chafing, and a cooling towel on the neck helps in queues and at outdoor events. If your hotel room or rental runs warm at night, a small travel fan is worth the space.

What to pack for Miami in September
September and October are the most hurricane-prone months for South Florida. Book refundable rates where you can and consider travel insurance bought before a storm is named. If a hurricane is forecast, Miami-Dade orders evacuations by zone and beaches and parks close.
Rain totals stay above 10 inches. Pack as for August, plus a printed copy of your booking details and a power bank in case of outages.
Columbia Switchback Rain JacketMid-range
Jun-Oct has 14-19 rain days a month, and winter fronts bring windy cool evenings; one shell covers both.
- Omni-Shield repels light rain and dries quickly
- Packs into its own hand pocket with stow-away hood
October and November in Miami
These are the shoulder months: still warm, with fewer visitors than winter.
What to pack for Miami in October
October starts wet and ends dry, since the wet season usually ends in the second half of the month. Highs are 86°F, there are 14 rain days and hurricane risk stays real in the first weeks. Sargassum eases off.
Mosquitoes stay heavy through October, especially in the Everglades. The National Park Service warns that wet-season insects can be intense along the trails and at Flamingo, so bring repellent and long sleeves for an airboat or Shark Valley trip.
Sawyer 20% Picaridin LotionBudget
Everglades trips and wet-season evenings mean mosquitoes; picaridin is odorless and will not damage sunglasses or gear.
- Up to 12 hours against mosquitoes and ticks
- Non-greasy, fragrance-free, safe on synthetic fabrics
What to pack for Miami in November
November brings the dry season back: 81°F highs, 68°F lows, 9 rain days and lower humidity. The sea is still around 79°F. The first cold front of the season can arrive late in the month, so pack one light layer and one pair of long pants.
What to wear in Miami at night
Miami dresses up at night. Restaurants in Brickell, the Design District and South Beach expect smart casual. The bigger clubs and rooftop bars run door policies that turn away flip-flops, athletic wear and baseball caps,.
Linen solves most of it. On Reddit, a r/Miami thread on the local dress code lands on linen shirts and trousers as the default for dinners and nights out, and locals add that winter mornings can start in the 50s or 60s before warming up by mid-morning.
What works:
- for men: linen or cotton shirts, chinos or tailored shorts for dinner, loafers or clean leather sneakers;
- for women: a slip or wrap dress, wide-leg trousers, flat sandals or low block heels (stilettos sink into the sand and the gaps between boardwalk planks);
- for everyone: one layer for the air conditioning, which runs cold in restaurants, cinemas and the Metrorail.
If you are going out late, plan your ride home. Our Miami areas to avoid map shows which neighborhoods are worth a rideshare after midnight.
Miami beach rules that change what you pack
The City of Miami Beach bans a long list of items on its beaches all year: alcohol, smoking, glass containers, coolers, tents, tables, inflatables, styrofoam, plastic straws and balloons. That rules out a lot of the classic beach-day kit. Bring water in a steel or plastic bottle, and rent loungers and umbrellas on the sand instead of carrying them.
Miami-Dade County runs the other beaches, including Crandon Park on Key Biscayne and Haulover. The northern section of Haulover is the county’s clothing-optional beach.

Miami packing FAQ
Should I pack jeans for Miami?
Only for a winter trip. From December to February, jeans are comfortable on cold-front evenings and in air-conditioned restaurants. From May to October they are too hot, they stay damp after a storm and they take a day to dry in humid air. Linen trousers or chinos do the same job at dinner and dry overnight.
How many swimsuits should I bring to Miami?
Two for most trips. Swimwear dries slowly in Miami's humidity, especially from June to September, so a second suit means you are not pulling on a damp one the next morning. Beach shops in South Beach sell swimwear year round if you forget yours.
Do I need reef-safe sunscreen in Miami?
It is not required. No Miami or Miami-Dade law restricts sunscreen ingredients, and a 2020 Florida law (SB 172) stops cities from passing such bans. Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide are still a sensible choice for snorkeling trips in Biscayne National Park.
Is carry-on enough for a week in Miami?
Yes, in any month. Light summer clothes pack small, and quick-dry fabrics can be washed in the sink and dry overnight in the hotel's air conditioning. A winter trip adds only one sweater and one pair of long pants to a summer list, so the same carry-on works from December to August.
