Dark anti-theft sling bag worn on the chest by a traveler standing on a busy metro platform

In May 2007 I lived in Barcelona and rode the L3 metro every day. One evening between Liceu and Paral·lel a man at the door asked me which stop was closest to the port, two others pressed in behind him, and by the time I reached the platform the zip of my canvas shoulder bag was open and my wallet was gone. The bag was zipped. It just had nothing stopping the zip from moving.

A locking zip fixes that. The best anti theft travel bag does not make you invisible to thieves. It turns a three-second lift into a fiddly job that a pickpocket working a crowded carriage will skip. The eleven bags below are crossbodies, slings and backpacks from Pacsafe, Travelon, BANGE and MATEIN, sorted by how you carry them.

For a first trip to Barcelona or Rome, pick the Pacsafe Go Crossbody. It is small enough to wear in front all day, and every opening on it either locks or sits against your body.

What makes a travel bag anti-theft

“Anti-theft” has no legal definition, so a listing can use it for anything from a steel-mesh body to a single zip pocket on the back panel. Five features do real work. Each one answers a specific method that police and travel advisories describe.

FeatureStopsDoes not stop
Locking zipper pullersA hand opening the bag from behind in a crowdYou opening it yourself while someone distracts you
Slash-resistant mesh bodyA blade cut through the side or bottomSomeone taking the whole bag
Cut-resistant strapA cut-and-run snatchA snatch where the thief pulls hard enough to drag you
Anchor or lockdown strapA bag lifted from a chair or table legTheft from inside the bag while it sits there
Hidden back-panel pocketA pickpocket working the outer pocketsAnyone who takes the bag

Locking pullers matter most. Pacsafe clips the pullers into a hook or a Roobar dock, and its larger bags use interlocking zips that also take a padlock. Travelon uses locking compartments where the puller clips into a ring next to the zip. Both work the same way in practice: the zip stays shut until you unclip it, which takes a second for you and a noticeable amount of fumbling for a stranger behind you.

Slash-resistant mesh is the feature that adds weight. Pacsafe builds stainless-steel wire mesh, which it calls eXomesh, into the panels a blade would target.

Travelon puts a slash-resistant mesh barrier in all four sides and the bottom of its Signature and Classic bags. Official advice rarely mentions slashing. The UK Foreign Office and the Government of Canada both describe distraction teams and zip-opening in far more detail than cutting. Treat the mesh as insurance, not the reason to buy.

Cut-resistant straps carry a steel cable or Dyneema fiber inside the webbing. The Government of Canada’s advice for Italy notes that thieves on scooters snatch bags from pedestrians and from cars at traffic lights. A reinforced strap will not stop a determined grab, but it removes the quick knife cut that makes those snatches easy.

The anchor strap matters most in cafés and bars. Barcelona’s police counted about 239 thefts a day in 2025, and 40% of them happened inside establishments such as bars, shops and restaurants. Only 20% were on public transport. A bag left on a chair back or at your feet under a café table is the most common target in one of Europe’s busiest pickpocket cities.

Are anti theft bags worth it

Yes, if you plan to spend time in the places where pickpocketing is documented: metros, mainline stations, airport trains and the squares around famous sights. The UK Foreign Office names Paris Metro and RER lines, the trains between Schiphol and Amsterdam Central, and the trams up to Prague Castle. ISTAT survey figures put Rome’s region at about 14 pickpocketing victims per 1,000 people, almost three times the Italian average. In places like these, a bag that slows a thief is worth carrying.

They are less useful on a road trip, a beach holiday or a resort stay, where the bag spends most of the day in a car or a room. A normal crossbody with a zip that faces your body does most of the job there.

Anti theft bag Reddit threads are more skeptical than most buying guides. On r/HerOneBag the most upvoted answer in a thread asking whether anti-theft products are necessary said that awareness and carrying fewer valuables matter more than the bag. Several r/travel users add that Travelon’s styling looks bulky and that visible locks can mark you as a tourist. Pacsafe and Travelon are still the two brands named most often when someone asks for an actual recommendation.

Both points hold. The bag only works when it is worn the right way.

Best anti theft crossbody bags

A crossbody worn in front is the format official advice describes. The FCDO’s France page says to carry bags across your body and use inside compartments. These three are unisex in styling. For handbag-style crossbodies and totes, see our anti-theft travel purse guide.

Pacsafe Go Crossbody: best anti theft crossbody bag overall

The Go Crossbody holds 2.5 L, which is a phone, a passport, a wallet, sunglasses and a small power bank, with a padded sleeve for a 7 in tablet. Both main compartments lock with pullers that clip onto hooks. The body uses Pacsafe’s steel mesh, and the wire-reinforced strap detaches and wraps around a chair leg or table post, then clips back to the bag.

It weighs 0.62 lb. Owners’ most common complaint is the zips themselves: the pullers are stiff, and opening the bag with one hand takes practice. That stiffness is part of the reason the bag works.

Travelon Classic Messenger: most room in a crossbody

The Travelon Classic Messenger is the bag to pick when your day includes a museum, lunch and a long walk back. It is 12.5 in tall with three zippered compartments, six pockets and two water bottle pockets. It weighs 10.4 oz empty. Travelon’s 5-point system covers it: locking zips, a slash-resistant body, two steel cables inside the strap, RFID-blocking slots and a lockdown strap.

The black messenger cut looks like a commuter bag rather than a travel accessory. Some Amazon owners report strap hardware failing early. Travelon’s warranty covers defects for two years in the US and Canada, so keep the receipt.

Pacsafe Go Tech Crossbody: thinnest for under a jacket

This one is 1.2 in thick and opens like a book onto a wallet with six card slots, a passport pocket and a phone sleeve that fits large phones. Wear it under a coat in winter and there is nothing for a pickpocket to see. The strap is steel-wire reinforced and the pullers clip down.

It holds documents and a phone. There is no room for a bottle or sunglasses, so plan to pair it with a second bag or rely on pockets for the rest.

Best anti theft sling bags

A sling sits higher on the chest than a crossbody and spins around to the front or back on one strap. That makes it easier to get into on a moving train and harder for someone behind you to reach when you wear it in front. The trade-off is weight on one shoulder, which shows after a full day with a 10 L sling.

Pacsafe Metrosafe X Sling: best anti theft sling bag

The Metrosafe X opens wide along the top, so you see the whole interior when you unzip it instead of digging. It wears on the left or right shoulder, front or back, with a strap that adjusts from 42.9 to 63.8 in. Lockable zips, a steel-mesh inlay, an RFID pocket and a wire-reinforced anchor strap are all here at 0.82 lb.

Owners find it fits a flat water flask better than a round bottle. If you carry a standard 750 ml bottle, it rides better in a side pocket of a backpack.

  • Lockable zippers, cut-resistant mesh, anchor strap, RFID pocket

Pacsafe Vibe 325: sling that carries a laptop

At 10 L the Vibe 325 is the largest sling here, with a padded sleeve for a 13 in laptop. Two compartments lock, the body has a steel-mesh inlay, and the detachable strap is wire reinforced and locks to a fixed object. It weighs 1.23 lb.

A 13 in MacBook Air fits, but owners say a laptop plus a jacket and lunch is a tight squeeze. Only one side of the strap is padded, so it carries best on the side you choose when you first adjust it. If you carry a laptop most days, the Metrosafe X backpack below spreads the load better.

Travelon Classic Sling: sling for a tablet and a bottle

The Travelon Classic Sling holds 5.5 L in a 14 in tall body. It has a padded sleeve for a tablet up to 10 in and a side pocket that folds away when there is no bottle in it. The main compartment locks, the panels are slash-resistant and the strap carries steel cables.

Some owners report items slipping from the outer pockets. Keep the outer pockets for things you would not mind losing and lock everything else in the main compartment.

Travelon Voyages Compact Sling: smallest sling, Budget tier

The Voyages Compact is 1.5 L, 8.5 in tall and 0.65 lb. It fits a phone, a passport and a wallet, plus keys on a tethered clip. Travelon still includes its 5-point system: a locking main compartment, slash-resistant material, an RFID pocket, a lockdown strap and a hidden rear pocket for documents.

This is the bag for an evening out or a day when the hotel holds everything else. It also fits under a jacket, the same job as the Go Tech.

Best anti theft backpacks for travel

A backpack is the hardest bag to protect, because it sits behind you where you cannot see it. On crowded transport, move it to your chest or hold it between your feet. What a good anti-theft backpack adds is locking zips you can secure before you step onto the platform and a back-panel pocket for the passport that sits against your spine.

In November 2009 I was living in Mexico City and took the Metro at Pino Suárez at evening rush hour with a colleague. He wore an ordinary backpack on his back, and when we came up at Zócalo he found a clean cut through the bottom of the front pocket and his phone gone. That is the only slashed bag I have seen in person. It changed how he wore a backpack on transport for good.

Pacsafe Metrosafe X 20L: best anti theft backpack for travel

The Metrosafe X 20L is a commuter-sized pack, 17.7 in tall, with a padded 15 in laptop sleeve, a 10 in tablet sleeve and a side pocket for an umbrella. The main zips interlock and take a padlock, the body uses Pacsafe’s steel mesh, and a detachable anchor strap locks it to a chair or luggage rack. A hidden pocket on the back panel holds a passport against your back.

It looks like a work backpack, not travel gear. At 20 L it holds a day’s kit and a light jacket. It is not a one-bag travel pack.

Pacsafe Go 25L: day bag that rides on a suitcase

The Go 25L adds 5 L over the Metrosafe X, and its luggage slip drops over a roller bag handle between the airport and the hotel. Two compartments lock, the body has steel mesh, and the anchor strap is wire reinforced. It weighs 1.6 lb, with two side bottle pockets and a hidden back pocket.

Owners like the hidden pocket and wish for more internal organization. Packing cubes or a small pouch fix that.

BANGE Anti Theft Backpack: built-in combination lock

The BANGE pack takes a different approach. Instead of steel mesh, its main compartment closes with a built-in zinc-alloy combination lock, and hidden pockets sit in the back panel. It holds 30 L with a separate compartment for laptops up to 17.3 in and has a USB port on the side that connects to a power bank inside.

At 2.8 lb it is the heaviest bag here, and the body fabric has no slash protection. Owners report stiff zips. Pick it for a big laptop and a lock you never have to carry separately, not for the strongest protection.

MATEIN Anti Theft Backpack: plain look, Budget tier

The MATEIN is a 29 L laptop backpack with one security feature: a zip pocket on the back panel, against your spine, for a passport and wallet. The zips do not lock and the fabric has no mesh. It is on this list because it looks like every other office backpack on the train, and nothing on it signals valuables.

It weighs 1.2 lb, takes a 15.6 in laptop and has a luggage strap. Add two small locking carabiners on the main zip pullers, a lower-profile alternative to a padlock.

Pacsafe vs Travelon

Pacsafe and Travelon make most of the bags people search for, and they differ more in materials and warranty than in features.

PacsafeTravelon
BodyRecycled polyester with stainless-steel eXomeshNylon or polyester with slash-resistant mesh on four sides and the bottom
ZipsPullers clip to hooks or a Roobar dock; interlocking zips on larger bagsLocking compartments with pullers that clip to a ring
StrapWire or Dyneema reinforced; detachable anchor strap on most bagsSteel cables in the strap; separate lockdown strap
Warranty5 years on bags2 years in the US and Canada, 1 year elsewhere
LookSporty, outdoor-brand stylingClassic travel-bag styling with more pockets

Pacsafe’s warranty is the clearest difference: five years on bags against defects, with proof of purchase from an authorized seller. Travelon’s is two years in the US and Canada and is voided if you buy from resale sites or remove the manufacture label. Travelon bags have more pockets and organizer slots, which suits travelers who like everything in its own place.

Pick Pacsafe for a longer warranty and anchor straps on most bags. Pick Travelon for more organization and a classic shape.

How to wear an anti theft travel bag in pickpocket hotspots

A locked zip only helps if it is locked before the moment you need it. Distraction teams are the method every advisory describes: one person asks for directions, spills something or offers help, and a second person goes into the bag. The Government of Canada’s France page lists spilled drinks, long conversations and persistent offers of help as the usual openings.

In April 2016 I was on the 64 bus from Termini toward the Vatican with a small daypack worn on my chest. A woman held up a folded map and asked about a stop while a man leaned in close behind her. When I checked the bag at the Vatican stop, one zipper puller had been tugged sideways out of its clip and the zip had not moved.

Habits that make any of these bags work harder:

  • Clip the pullers before you enter the station, not on the platform. Barcelona’s Mossos d’Esquadra advise wearing the bag in front with valuables in the inner pockets.
  • Wear a crossbody or sling on the side away from the street. Scooter snatching is documented in Italy, and a bag on the curb side is the easier grab.
  • Never hang a bag on a chair back. The FCDO’s Netherlands page says it outright, and Barcelona’s figures show why: 40% of thefts there happen inside bars, shops and restaurants.
  • Split your valuables. Keep a backup card and a copy of your passport photo page in a different bag from the originals, and leave spare cash in the hotel safe.
  • Stay awake on airport trains with the bag on your lap. The FCDO warns that gangs work the trains and trams between Schiphol and Amsterdam Central.

In Lisbon, where I live now, I sit at café terraces in Chiado with my bag strap looped around a chair leg. A waiter at one of them told me in September 2024 that a bag left on a chair back had gone the week before, while its owner was three steps away ordering.

Before you leave the hotel

  • Passport, one card and the day's cash in the locking compartment
  • Backup card and a copy of the passport photo page in a separate bag or the safe
  • Phone in an inside pocket, not the outer slip pocket

Build a printable list for your trip

RFID blocking travel bag pockets: what they do and don’t do

Every bag on this list except the BANGE and MATEIN has an RFID-blocking pocket. It shields contactless cards and passports from a reader held close to the bag. That is real, and it is also the least important feature here.

Contactless skimming has been shown in labs, but Which? calls it an impractical way for criminals to get card details, and Visa told AARP that it is very unlikely and limited in scope. The US Department of Homeland Security says e-passports already include anti-skimming protection. The bigger card risk on a trip is a magnetic-stripe skimmer on an ATM or a parking machine, and no bag pocket stops that.

Use the RFID pocket because it is there. Do not choose one bag over another because of it.

Anti theft travel bag FAQ

Can you take an anti-theft bag through airport security?

Yes. Steel mesh and cable straps go through the X-ray belt like any other bag, and Travelon and Pacsafe owners on r/TravelHacks report no problems at airport or museum security. Unclip the zipper pullers before you reach the belt, because screeners may need to open the bag, and a locked compartment slows the line.

Do anti-theft backpacks fit as a personal item on flights?

The slings and crossbodies here fit every airline's personal-item limit. The backpacks depend on the airline. The Pacsafe Metrosafe X 20L (17.7 x 11.8 x 5.1 in) fits American's 18 x 14 x 8 in limit and easyJet's 45 x 36 x 20 cm, but is about 5 cm too tall for the 40 x 30 x 15 cm limit at Lufthansa, KLM and Air France.

Is a crossbody or a backpack safer against pickpockets?

A crossbody worn in front is safer, because you can see and touch every zip. The UK Foreign Office advises carrying bags across the body for that reason. A backpack on your back is out of sight, so on metros and buses move it to your chest or put it between your feet.

Is a sling bag the same as a crossbody bag?

No, though both cross the body. A crossbody hangs at the hip from a long strap, while a sling rides higher on the chest or back on a shorter strap and spins around to the front. Slings usually hold more and take a tablet or small laptop. Crossbodies are lighter and easier to wear under a coat.

Do I still need a money belt with an anti-theft bag?

Not for daily sightseeing. A locking bag worn in front protects a day's cash and one card. A money belt or hidden pouch is worth it on overnight trains and buses, where you sleep with your valuables, and for the backup card and passport copy the Foreign Office says to keep apart from the originals.
