In April 2017 I climbed the steps below Sacré-Cœur with a belt bag slid around to my hip, where it sat out of the way of my camera. At the top I reached for my phone and found the zip already open and the phone gone. Nobody had touched me that I noticed. The bag was fine. Where I wore it was the problem.
The best anti theft fanny pack does two jobs: it makes the zip hard to open and it sits where you can see it. Twelve picks below cover locking belt bags with steel mesh, everyday travel fanny packs with hidden pockets and flat money belts that go under clothes.

For Rome or Barcelona, the pairing that covers the most risk is the Pacsafe Vibe 100 and a Budget-tier money belt. The belt bag carries the day. The money belt carries the passport.
What makes a travel fanny pack anti theft
Four features do the work. Many bags sold as an anti theft belt bag have only one or two of them, so check the listing for each.
- Slash-resistant body. A wire or steel mesh sewn into the fabric. Pacsafe calls its version eXomesh and puts it in the panels a knife would reach first. Travelon sews mesh into all five panels of its anti-theft bags: front, back, both sides and bottom.
- Cut-resistant strap. A cable or Dyneema core inside the webbing. A thief who cuts an ordinary strap walks off with the whole bag.
- Locking zips. The zip pullers clip into each other or into a hook, so a hand in a crowd cannot slide them open with one pull.
- RFID blocking. A lining that stops card readers. This is the feature that matters least, as the next section explains.
What none of them stop is a distraction. The French Interior Ministry’s visitor guide describes petition signers on café terraces and at cash machines whose partners go through your bag while you read the clipboard. Italy’s Polizia di Stato describes thieves on mopeds who grab bags from the street side. Mesh does not help against either. A bag worn in front, zipped and clipped, does.
Is an RFID fanny pack worth paying for?
No. Treat it as a bonus. AARP quotes experts who call RFID card theft “very theoretical”, and contactless cards only answer a reader a few centimeters away. In February 2026 UK Finance told Which? it had no recorded cases of criminals using a contactless reader in a public place. Cards get stolen through hacked merchants, ATM skimmers and lost wallets. Eight of the twelve picks below have a blocking pocket anyway, so you get it without choosing for it.
Best anti theft fanny packs with locking zips and slash-resistant mesh
These four suit the cities where pickpocketing is a known problem. The UK Foreign Office warns about pickpockets on the Paris Metro and RER, in Italian city centres and main stations and on Prague’s trams to the castle. Barcelona recorded 55,475 pickpocket-type thefts in the first five months of 2019, according to the city council. The count fell to 34,314 for the same months in 2022, which is still more than 200 a day.
Pacsafe Vibe 100Mid-range
Steel mesh in the panels, a cable in the strap and zips that lock together. The pick for metro cars and markets in cities with known pickpocket problems.
- 4 L, 27 x 9 x 16 cm, 325 g; eXomesh steel-mesh panels and wire-reinforced Carrysafe strap
- Roobar locking zips, RFID-blocking pockets, PopNLock clip; waist 82.6-115 cm
The Vibe 100 has every feature on the list above. The mesh is hidden in the fabric, so it looks like an ordinary 4 L hip pack. The Roobar system interlocks the zip pullers, and the PopNLock clip anchors the bag to a chair or railing. The waist belt runs from 82.6 to 115 cm.
Pacsafe Vibe 150Mid-range
Wears across the chest or at the waist, and the wire-core strap loops around a chair leg and clips shut when you sit down at a cafe or station.
- 13 x 6.3 x 2.4 in, 0.82 lb; steel-mesh fabric, interlocking zippers (padlock-ready)
- RFID-blocking pocket, 2 zippered compartments and 4 pockets; 44 in strap
The Vibe 150 is longer and flatter than the Vibe 100 and works best across the chest. Its 44 in strap has a wire core and a clip at the end, so you can loop it around a table leg on a café terrace and close it. The zips take a small padlock. Inside there are two zipped compartments, which makes it easy to keep the phone apart from the wallet. Pick it over the Vibe 100 if you prefer a longer, flatter bag worn across the chest.
Travelon Classic Waist PackMid-range
Slash-resistant lining on five sides, a locking main compartment and a pull-out bottle pocket, so a full day of walking fits in one locked bag.
- 9 x 6 x 2 in, 0.70 lb; slash-resistant mesh lining, slash-resistant strap, locking compartments
- RFID-blocking organizer, mesh water bottle pocket; fits waists to 52 in
The Travelon Classic is the locking pack with a pull-out mesh pocket for a water bottle, so the bottle doesn’t take space inside. The mesh lining covers four sides and the bottom, the strap is slash resistant and the main compartment locks. At 9 x 6 x 2 in it fits waists up to 52 in.
Travelon Active Waist PackBudget
The Budget-tier way into Travelon's anti-theft line, with a padded air-mesh back that keeps a waist pack from soaking through on hot sightseeing days.
- 9.5 x 6 x 2 in, 0.70 lb; 5-point Anti-Theft security system, rear and front zippered pockets
- RFID-blocking card and passport slots; padded air mesh back; fits waists to 48 in
The Active is the Budget-tier Travelon. Travelon names a five-point anti-theft system for it but doesn’t list the points the way it does for the Classic. It has RFID card and passport slots in the main compartment and an air-mesh back panel, and that panel is the reason to choose it for a summer trip, when a waist pack against a shirt turns damp. It fits waists up to 48 in.
Best travel fanny pack for everyday sightseeing
Not every trip needs steel mesh. For Lisbon, Tokyo or a national park, a well-made belt bag worn in front with a zipped inner pocket stops a casual hand. These three also look like the bags locals wear.
On Saturday mornings in July 2023 I walked the Feira da Ladra flea market in Lisbon with small bills in the front pocket of a belt bag and my cards in the main compartment. I paid for a chipped plate and a box of old postcards without opening the main zip once. That split limits what a quick hand can reach.
Bellroy Lite Belt BagMid-range
A slim belt bag that doesn't look like travel gear. The back pocket sits flat against your body, out of reach of a hand in a crowd.
- 1.8 L, 5.9 x 8.7 x 2 in; water-resistant recycled ripstop with coated main zipper
- Hidden back pocket, magnetic buckle, key clip; strap 24.5-41.2 in
The Bellroy is the bag on this list that looks least like travel gear. The useful part is the back pocket, which sits against your stomach when you wear it in front and is hard to reach without removing the bag. That is where a spare card goes. The main zip is coated and the fabric is water resistant. The magnetic buckle opens with one hand, which is quick for you and for anyone else, so keep a hand near it in crowds.
Patagonia Black Hole Mini Hip PackMid-range
A 1 L hip pack that folds into its own pocket inside a carry-on, for day trips. Zipped security pocket, no locks or mesh.
- 1 L recycled nylon ripstop, 4.75 x 8 x 2 in; folds into its own pocket
- Main zip pocket plus a zippered security pocket; waist or bandolier carry
The Black Hole Mini folds into its own pocket, so it disappears into a carry-on until you need it. On a day trip you wear it and leave the bigger bag in the room. At 1 L it holds a phone, cards and keys, and there is no room for more. It has a zipped security pocket but no locks or mesh.
Peak Design Everyday Sling 3LPremium
A structured 3 L sling that also wears at the waist, with a padded divider for a small camera and a weatherproof shell.
- 3 L, 30 x 19 x 12 cm outside; weatherproof 400D recycled nylon shell with UltraZip
- FlexFold divider, stretch internal pockets, external slip pocket; strap 86-172 cm
The Peak Design is a sling first, and its strap adjusts from 86 to 172 cm, so it also wears as a waist bag. The FlexFold divider holds a small camera or a compact lens, and the 400D shell is weatherproof. Of the everyday bags here it is the one to pick if you carry a camera. It has no locks or mesh, so wear it in front on a crowded tram.
Best travel fanny pack under clothes
A money belt is the hidden fanny pack for travel: a flat pouch on an elastic band that goes under your waistband, against your skin. It isn’t a bag you open during the day. Rick Steves calls it deep storage: passport, spare card and backup cash go in it, and the day’s spending money stays in a pocket you can reach.

In May 2009 I took a 13-hour night bus from Mexico City to San Cristóbal de las Casas with my passport in a money belt under my jeans. By morning the pages were damp and the cover had curled. Since that trip the passport goes into a zip bag before it goes into the belt, which is what Rick Steves also advises.
Wear it tucked in like a shirt tail, over your underwear and under your trousers or skirt. The pouch can sit over your stomach or slide around to the small of your back. Under a dress, wear it at the hips under a pair of cycling shorts, or switch to a leg or neck pouch.
Eagle Creek Undercover Money BeltBudget
At 1 oz with one zipped pocket, it holds a passport and spare card under your waistband and is the least noticeable belt here.
- 9 x 4.5 in, 1 oz; lightweight ripstop with moisture-wicking back panel
- Zippered pocket for cards, passport and cash; adjustable elastic waistband
At 1 oz the Eagle Creek is the lightest belt here, with one zipped pocket and a moisture-wicking back panel. The pocket takes a passport and a few cards and not much else. It has no RFID lining, which matters little for the reasons above.
The Zero Grid has two zipped compartments, so a passport sits in one and backup cash in the other. It comes with seven blocking sleeves, six for cards and one for a passport, which also work as dividers inside the belt.
Lewis N. Clark Waist StashBudget
Two zip pockets, a moisture-wicking back and a 50 in elastic strap. The simple under-clothes pick for a first trip abroad.
- Rip-stop nylon with TravelDry moisture-wicking fabric; 50 in elastic strap
- Two zippered pockets with interior mesh; RFID-blocking material
The Lewis N. Clark is the plain choice: two zip pockets, mesh dividers inside, a TravelDry back panel and a 50 in elastic strap. Lewis N. Clark lists the zippers as self-repairing. It suits someone on a first trip abroad who wants one belt and no decisions.
VENTURE 4TH Money BeltBudget
At 0.2 in thick it lies flat under a shirt, fits a phone up to 6.9 in and has the widest waist range here, 29 to 58 in.
- 0.2 in thick, 0.26 lb; 210D water-resistant ripstop, waistband fits 29-58 in
- Two zippered pockets, multi-layer RFID blocking, locking side-release clip
The Venture 4th is 0.2 in thick and fits a phone up to 6.9 in. Its waistband fits 29 to 58 in, the widest range in this guide, and the side-release clip locks so it can’t open by accident. A phone in a money belt is awkward to reach, so this is for a night bus or a hostel dorm rather than for the street.
Travelon Undergarment PouchBudget
Three outer drop pockets hold boarding passes and tickets, so at the gate you never open the zip that holds the passport.
- 10.75 x 5 in, 0.38 lb polyester; air-mesh back panel, adjustable waist strap
- Two zippered pockets for passport, cash, cards; RFID-blocking; 3 drop pockets
The Travelon pouch can be worn over or under clothes. The three drop pockets on the outside hold boarding passes, tickets and a receipt you’ll need later, so at the gate you aren’t opening the zip that holds the passport. The back is air mesh, which helps when it is worn over a shirt in warm weather.
Money belt vs fanny pack: which one holds what
You don’t have to choose. The setup that works is two layers: a visible belt bag for what you use during the day and a hidden belt for what you can’t afford to lose. Rick Steves says not to keep the important things in a fanny pack, because thieves expect valuables there. The two-layer system handles that.
| Anti theft fanny pack | Money belt under clothes | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Front of the waist or across the chest | Under the waistband, against the skin |
| What goes in it | Phone, one card, the day’s cash, sunglasses, lip balm | Passport, spare card, backup cash |
| How often you open it | All day | A few times a trip |
| Reduces | Pickpockets in crowds, cut straps (with mesh and cable) | The loss when a visible bag is snatched or taken |
| Weak point | Seen by everyone | Hard to reach, damp in heat |
In November 2018 I bought a kilim in Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar and had to untuck my shirt at the stall to reach the money belt for the rest of the payment. Everyone in the lane saw where I kept my money.
A thread on r/onebag makes the same point: opening a hidden belt in a crowd shows thieves where it is. Ask Reddit for the best fanny pack for travel and r/travel answers with awareness over gear. If you expect a large purchase, move the cash to the belt bag at the hotel.
In the belt bag (front, zipped)
- Phone
- One payment card
- The day's cash, small bills in an outer pocket
- Hotel key card
- Sunglasses and lip balm
- Small carabiner for the zip pullers
In the money belt (under clothes)
- Passport in a zip bag
- Spare card from a different account
- Backup cash
- Paper copy of insurance and emergency numbers
Left at the hotel
- Second spare card, in the room safe
- Photocopy of the passport
- Anything you would not want to lose on the metro
If your trip also needs a bigger bag, the anti-theft travel bag guide covers slings and backpacks with the same features, and the anti-theft travel purse guide covers crossbody purses and totes.
How to wear a travel fanny pack so pickpockets skip you
Position matters more than the bag. The Catalan police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, tell visitors to carry bags in front and keep cash in a crossbody bag with a secure closure. The French ministry recommends a waist pouch over a backpack, with the opening facing your body.
- Wear it in front. At your navel or across your chest, never on the hip or at the back. A bag you can’t see is one you can’t watch.
- Zip toward the body. Turn the bag so the zip opening runs along the side that touches you.
- Clip the zips. Even on a bag without locks, a small carabiner through both pullers stops a single quick pull.
- Put your forearm over it on escalators, in metro doors and in any crowd that presses in. Italy’s Polizia di Stato gives the same advice.
- Keep the street side clear. On a pavement wear the bag on the side away from traffic, out of reach of a moped.
- Never take it off at a table. If you sit down, keep it on, or loop the strap around a chair leg.
The Mossos d’Esquadra also advise avoiding the first and last carriages on metro platforms, where thieves wait for the doors. The Barcelona city welcome page names metro stations, public squares and monuments as the places pickpockets work. For city-specific risk, the site’s areas to avoid in New York City and San Francisco maps cover where theft reports cluster.
Travel fanny packs at airport security, museums and stadiums

The TSA asks travelers to empty their pockets and put a wallet and phone into a carry-on bag before the scanner. A belt bag worn on the body is treated the same way: take it off and put it in a bin. RFID pockets also go through the X-ray, as Travelon’s FAQ notes.
In June 2019 at Milan Malpensa I walked into the body scanner still wearing a belt bag. The officer sent me back, and when I came through the second time my tray with the passport had already rolled to the end of the belt. Take the belt bag off before the line, keep the passport in the money belt or your carry-on, and put the bin on the belt just before you step into the scanner.
On board, Delta lists a belt bag or fanny pack as a personal item, and that is how most airlines treat it. On fares that allow only one free bag, such as Ryanair’s 40 x 30 x 20 cm under-seat bag, a belt bag worn separately can be counted as that bag. Put it inside the bag before boarding.
Venues have their own rules:
- NFL stadiums follow the clear bag policy: clear bags up to 12 x 6 x 12 in plus a small clutch up to 4.5 x 6.5 in. A non-clear fanny pack is refused, and Lincoln Financial Field lists fanny packs as prohibited outright.
- The Louvre refuses items over 55 x 35 x 20 cm and screens every visitor. A belt bag goes through.
- The Vatican Museums send bags over 40 x 35 x 15 cm to the cloakroom. A belt bag stays with you.
- Walt Disney World sets the limit at 24 x 15 x 18 in and screens bags at the entrance. Every bag here is far under it.
Anti theft fanny pack FAQ
Do fanny packs make you look like a tourist?
Less than they used to. Belt bags worn across the chest are common city wear in Europe, the US and East Asia, and a plain dark one in nylon or ripstop blends in. What marks a tourist is a bulky bag with a water bottle hanging off it, worn low on the hip. A slim bag worn high on the chest reads as local.
How many liters should a travel belt bag hold?
One to four liters. A 1 to 2 L bag holds a phone, one card, keys and cash. At 3 to 4 L you add sunglasses, a small water bottle or a compact camera. Above 4 L a belt bag bounces and sticks out, and a small sling or daypack does the job better.
How do I stop a fanny pack from bouncing when I walk?
Tighten the strap until the bag sits flat with one finger of slack. Pack the heaviest item, usually the phone, in the pocket closest to your body. A bag filled to about three quarters holds its shape better than a half-empty one, and a waist strap with a stretch section moves with you instead of pulling.
What is the difference between a fanny pack and a sling bag?
A fanny pack has a short waist strap and sits at the hips or across the chest. A sling has a longer single strap and a bigger body, usually 3 to 10 L, and is worn across the back or chest. Many belt bags now come with straps long enough to wear either way.
Can I wear a fanny pack at the beach?
Yes, but not into the water unless it is a dry bag. Most belt bags are water resistant, which keeps out a splash, not a swim. At the beach keep the phone and a card in the bag on your body and leave the passport at the hotel. A waterproof phone pouch is the better choice for swimming.
