In October 2016 I stood at a gate in Bergamo and watched an agent push my soft duffel into a steel frame. Length fit. Width fit. A jacket I had rolled on top at the last minute left the bag 4 cm too deep, and it went in the hold.
The best travel duffel bag carry on is the one that still fits the frame when it is full, and that frame changes with every airline. Seven carry-on duffels below go up against the published cabin limits of major airlines, and three more cover the hold and the trip home.
Best travel duffel bag carry on picks by situation
| Your trip | Pick | Why this one |
|---|---|---|
| One bag, most airlines | Patagonia Black Hole 40L | Clears every full-size cabin limit in this guide except Ryanair’s 20 cm depth |
| Same depth, Budget tier | Columbia Landroamer 40L | The biggest bag here that fits the US limit, with straps that tuck away |
| 7 or 8 kg cabin limits | Osprey Daylite Duffel 30 | Weighs 0.54 kg, so nearly the whole allowance goes to clothes |
| Packing cubes | Peak Design Travel Duffel 35L | Wide opening and a shape built around cubes |
| Bus or trail after the flight | Eagle Creek Migrate 40L | 1680D base, plus a zip that adds length for the checked flight home |
| Under the seat | Travelpro Day-to-Day Duffel 26L | The only pick that fits a 20 cm depth limit |
| Work trip | Samsonite Better Than Basics Weekender | Separate shoe and 14 in laptop compartments |
| Checked, one week | North Face Voyager Duffel 62L | 2.8 lb, so almost all of a 50 lb allowance stays usable |
| Checked, ski or dive kit | Osprey Transporter Wheeled 90L | It rolls, and an aluminum handle takes the load |
| Spare bag for the return | Eddie Bauer Stowaway 45L | Folds into its own pocket |
If I could only recommend one duffel to a friend, it would be the Black Hole 40L. Its 22 cm depth is the reason. Of the 40 L bags here, only the Columbia matches that number.
What size carry on duffel bag fits the overhead bin
The standard US limit of 22 x 14 x 9 in holds 45 L as a solid box. A duffel is oval in cross section, so a bag with those outer dimensions holds about 36 L. Bags sold as 35 to 40 L fit because soft sides give a little. Bags sold as 45 L bulge past the 9 in depth.
Depth is the measurement that fails. Length and width are fixed by the fabric panels. Depth grows with every sweater, and a stuffed bag can gain several centimeters over the number on its spec sheet.
Soft sides do not earn an exception. American requires a carry-on to fit the airport sizer with handles and wheels included. Delta names the duffel as an example and applies the same limits. Air Canada uses automated sizers.
Pack a duffel to about 80% of its capacity and pull the compression straps if it has them. A half-empty bag squeezes into a frame. A full one sits on top of it.

Duffel dimensions against airline carry-on limits
No duffel fits everywhere. These are published outer dimensions in centimeters, compared with each cabin limit. “Fits” means every side is within the limit. Anything else shows the overage, and small overages disappear on a bag packed below capacity.
| Duffel (cm) | US big three (56 x 35 x 23) | Lufthansa, Turkish (55 x 40 x 23) | Emirates (55 x 38 x 22) | Qatar (50 x 37 x 25) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Black Hole (50 x 32 x 22) | Fits | Fits | Fits | Fits |
| Columbia (52 x 35 x 22) | Fits | Fits | Fits | 2 long |
| Daylite (51 x 33 x 23) | Fits | Fits | 1 deep | 1 long |
| Eagle Creek (47 x 26 x 24) | 1 deep | 1 deep | 2 deep | Fits |
| Peak Design (56 x 35 x 26) | 3 deep | 1 long, 3 deep | 1 long, 4 deep | 6 long, 1 deep |
| Travelpro (43 x 28 x 20) | Fits | Fits | Fits | Fits |
| Samsonite (48 x 36 x 25) | 1 wide, 2 deep | 2 deep | 3 deep | Fits |
Southwest allows 24 x 16 x 10 in, so all seven fit. British Airways and easyJet’s paid large bag allow 56 x 45 x 25 cm, which fits all seven except the Peak Design, and that bag misses by about 1 cm. Singapore Airlines caps the sum of the three sides at 115 cm, and only the Peak Design goes past it. Air Canada matches the Lufthansa column. Air France and KLM allow 55 x 35 x 25 cm, which only the Peak Design and the Samsonite miss, by 1 cm. Ryanair’s paid bag is 55 x 40 x 20 cm, and the Travelpro is the only one that fits it.
Best travel duffel bag with backpack straps
In March 2009 I got off a bus in Guanajuato with a duffel that had a single shoulder strap. The walk uphill to my room took 12 minutes over cobbles, and I switched shoulders about 30 times. Every main bag I have carried since has had backpack straps.

Straps work best on a bag you pack light. A r/BuyItForLife thread carries the warning for the other end of the scale: an owner who wore a 50 lb duffel on their back was sore for a week. Stowable straps also keep a bag from snagging on a baggage belt or in a sizer.
Patagonia Black Hole 40LPremium
Premium 40L carry-on duffel for rain, rough baggage handling and long-haul trips, with removable padded straps for backpack carry.
- 40 L, about 19.7 x 12.6 x 8.7 in (50 x 32 x 22 cm), 1,045 g, removable padded straps
- 900D recycled polyester ripstop with a TPU film laminate; padded base
The Black Hole clears the most cabin limits of the 40 L bags here. The straps come off, the bag stuffs into its own side pocket and the laminate keeps rain out on a tarmac. The tradeoff is 1.05 kg of bag and a sack-like shape once it is loaded. Amazon listings for it come from third-party sellers, so check who is shipping before you order.
Columbia Landroamer 40LBudget
A 40L carry-on duffel with stowable backpack straps, for one-bag trips that mix hauling and walking.
- 41.6 L, 20.5 x 13.75 x 8.6 in, 1 lb 11.7 oz, stowable shoulder straps
- TPU-coated polyester body with an 840D ballistic nylon bottom panel
The Columbia is 2 cm longer than the Black Hole and still clears the US limit, which makes it the roomiest legal bag here. The straps tuck away and the 840D bottom panel handles a wet floor. It misses Qatar’s 50 cm length limit.
Eagle Creek Migrate 40LMid-range
Mid-range 40L carry-on duffel with tuck-away backpack straps and a zip expansion, built for flights that end in a bus or a trail.
- 40 L, expands to 44 L; 18.5 x 10.25 x 9.5 in standard, 2 lb 1 oz, backpack straps
- 900D recycled polyester TPU body with a 1680D ballistic polyester base
The Eagle Creek is the shortest 40 L bag here at 47 cm, and the 24 cm depth is the number to watch. It suits trips that end on a bus or a trail. Opening the expansion zip stretches it to 72 cm long, which makes it a checked bag, so treat that zip as a way to bring more home.
Peak Design Travel Duffel 35LPremium
Premium 35L duffel for packing-cube travelers: wide single-zip opening, 4 external pockets and hand straps that convert to backpack carry.
- 35 L, 22 x 14 x 10 in external, 2 lb; hand straps reconfigure for backpack carry
- 600D recycled Versa Shell exterior with a 900D waterproof bottom liner
The Peak Design is the pick for people who already pack in cubes, because it takes three of the brand’s cubes. It is also the least airline-friendly bag on this list. At 26 cm deep it needs to go on board underpacked, so I would choose it for Southwest, not Emirates.
Best duffel bag for international travel
The best duffel bag for international travel solves two problems US travelers rarely meet: weight limits and fare rules.
| Airline | Cabin bag (cm) | Weight limit |
|---|---|---|
| Lufthansa | 55 x 40 x 23 | 8 kg |
| Turkish Airlines | 55 x 40 x 23 | 8 kg |
| Air France | 55 x 35 x 25 | 12 kg with small bag |
| KLM | 55 x 35 x 25 | 12 kg with small bag |
| Emirates | 55 x 38 x 22 | 7 kg in Economy |
| Qatar Airways | 50 x 37 x 25 | 7 kg in Economy |
| Singapore Airlines | 115 total of three sides | 7 kg in Economy |
| Qantas | 56 x 36 x 23 | 7 kg international Economy |
| ANA | 55 x 40 x 25 (115 total) | 10 kg with personal item |
| Avianca | 55 x 35 x 25 | 10 kg |
Major US airlines and British Airways post no cabin weight limit, so the weight of the bag itself only starts to matter once you fly abroad. On a 7 kg limit, a 1.3 kg structured duffel leaves 5.7 kg for everything else. A 0.54 kg duffel leaves almost 6.5 kg, and the difference is a pair of shoes.
Osprey Daylite Duffel 30Budget
Light 30L duffel for 7-8 kg cabin limits on long-haul and European carriers; at 1.2 lb it leaves most of the allowance for clothes.
- 30 L, 20 x 13 x 9 in, 1.2 lb; backpack, shoulder and grab-handle carry
- 300D recycled polyester ripstop with DWR; zippered side and end pockets
The Daylite gives up heavy fabric to get that weight. At 300D it is a bag to carry on, not a bag to check. It fits Lufthansa and Turkish as sold and goes 1 cm over at Emirates and Qatar, a gap that closes when it is packed below capacity.
Then check the fare. United Basic Economy, Air Canada Economy Basic on many routes, Lufthansa Economy Basic on short and medium-haul flights, KLM Basic and Avianca Basic can all exclude a cabin bag. Ryanair’s free bag is 40 x 30 x 20 cm, and its 55 x 40 x 20 cm bag requires a paid add-on. easyJet’s free bag is 45 x 36 x 20 cm. None of the 30 L or 40 L duffels here fit those free allowances.
Best underseat duffel and work-trip duffel
Travelpro Day-to-Day Duffel 26LPremium
Underseat duffel for personal-item rules: shoe pocket, a rear strap that slides over a rolling-bag handle, and a structured shape.
- 26 L, 17 x 11 x 8 in (43 x 28 x 20 cm), 2.8 lb, dedicated shoe pocket
- Rear strap secures it to a rolling bag; recycled ballistic ECOFAB fabric
The Travelpro fits under the seat on American (45 x 35 x 20 cm) and JetBlue (43 x 33 x 20 cm), and within easyJet’s free bag. It is 3 cm too wide for United’s 43 x 25 x 22 cm personal item, so pack it thin there. The rear strap slides over a rolling bag’s handle, which suits anyone who takes both. It has no backpack straps, and at 1.27 kg it is heavy for its size because it holds its shape.
Samsonite Better Than Basics WeekenderMid-range
Business-trip duffel: a drop-bottom shoe compartment keeps shoes apart and a 14 in laptop compartment handles the work side.
- 18.9 x 14.2 x 9.8 in, 2.9 lb, drop-bottom compartment for shoes
- 14 in laptop compartment; ribbed matte polyester with recycled-PET lining
The Samsonite is built for a work trip. Shoes go in the drop-bottom compartment and a laptop goes in its own sleeve, so a suit jacket never meets a sole. It runs wide and deep for US sizers at 36 x 25 cm, so keep it underpacked on a full flight.
Best duffel bag for checked luggage
Most airlines cap a checked bag at 62 linear inches (158 cm) and 50 lb (23 kg). British Airways caps each side instead, at 90 x 75 x 43 cm. Emirates and Singapore Airlines vary by route.
A duffel works well in the hold. It leaves more of the 50 lb allowance for clothes than a hard suitcase does, and it gives way when a loader stacks it. In August 2018 on a press trip I watched a pilot in Maun load soft bags into the belly of a small plane, then send a fellow guest’s hard case back to the lodge because it would not fit.

North Face Voyager Duffel 62LMid-range
Mid-range 62L checked duffel for week-long international trips; padded straps tuck away so it works as a backpack on arrival.
- 62 L, 27 x 16 x 12.45 in, about 2 lb 13 oz, tuck-away padded shoulder straps
- 300D recycled polyester with TPU coating; 840D ballistic nylon base
The Voyager adds up to 55.5 linear inches, so it stays well inside the limit. At 2.8 lb it costs little of your 50 lb allowance. Note the name: this is the Base Camp line’s lighter 300D travel model, not the thick classic Base Camp duffel Reddit talks about.
Osprey Transporter Wheeled 90LPremium
Premium 90L wheeled duffel for gear-heavy trips: ski, dive or sports kit rolls through the airport instead of riding on a shoulder.
- 90 L, 31.1 x 18.5 x 13.4 in, 7.11 lb, 110 mm wheels, aluminum trolley handle
- 630D recycled nylon ripstop body with an 840D base; lockable YKK zippers
The Transporter’s 31.1 x 18.5 x 13.4 in adds up to 63 linear inches when it is packed full, 1 in over the standard limit. Pack it below capacity to stay within 62, or expect an oversize charge. At 7.11 lb it also weighs more than twice the Voyager. Book it for ski, dive and sports kit that would otherwise ride on your shoulder through three terminals.
Packable duffel for the flight home
In April 2025 I flew out of Fes with two ceramic bowls and a wool rug I had not planned to buy. The rug and my clothes went in the hold in a thin nylon duffel that had spent the trip folded at the bottom of my carry-on, and the bowls stayed with me in the cabin.
Packing a spare is one of the most repeated tips on r/onebag: go out carry-on only and check a folded duffel on the return.
Eddie Bauer Stowaway 45LBudget
Budget spare-bag duffel that folds into its own pocket; it adds 45L for souvenirs on the return leg and takes almost no suitcase space.
- 45 L, 23 x 11.75 x 11.75 in open; folds into a 9.5 x 9 in pocket
- 200D ripstop polyester with a water-repellent finish and a zippered shoe garage
The Stowaway is too large for the cabin once it is stuffed, at 30 cm deep. That does not matter for this job, because it goes in the hold on the way back. The 200D ripstop is thin, so keep breakables in the cabin and clothes in the duffel.
Duffel bag vs suitcase
In November 2022 at Kyoto Station I squeezed a soft duffel into a coin locker that the rolling cases beside me could not enter. A duffel takes the shape of the space it goes into, whether that is a locker, a bus hold, a car trunk or the last gap in a bin.
| Duffel | Rolling suitcase | |
|---|---|---|
| Sizer | Compresses if underpacked | Fixed, wheels and handle count |
| Smooth airport floors | Worse | Better |
| Stairs, cobbles and buses | Better with backpack straps | Worse |
| Organization | One main space, so use cubes | Two halves and a divider |
| Protecting fragile items | Poor | Better in a hard shell |
Duffels lose on long indoor walks. A r/travel thread on the choice points out that a duffel lacks both wheels and a real backpack harness, and for a trip that is all airports and hotels, that is correct. Pick the duffel when the trip has stairs, boats or buses in it.
How to read duffel fabric and zipper specs
Denier) measures the weight of the yarn, not the strength of the bag. A 900D fabric uses a heavier thread than a 300D one, which is useful when comparing the same weave. It says nothing about the coating.
TPU is the coating to look for, because it adds abrasion resistance and sheds water. “Weatherproof” has no defined standard, so read it as rain protection on a tarmac, not as a bag that survives a dunk. On a stuffed duffel the main zip takes the strain, so check it before you compare denier numbers.

Travel duffel bag FAQ
What is the best travel duffel bag reddit users recommend?
The Patagonia Black Hole is the most-named duffel across r/onebag, r/HerOneBag and r/BuyItForLife threads, followed by the classic North Face Base Camp and the Cotopaxi Allpa. Owners praise the durability and warranties of the first two and the suitcase-style opening of the Allpa. The common complaint is carry comfort once a bag is heavy.
Is a duffel bag allowed as a carry-on?
Yes. Airlines treat a duffel like any other carry-on, and Delta names it as an example on its baggage page. The bag has to meet the airline's size limit with handles included, and on many international carriers it also has to meet a weight limit.
Does the TSA set the carry-on size limit?
No. The TSA screens bags and leaves carry-on dimensions to each airline. There is also no global standard: IATA's Cabin OK size is a guideline that airlines may ignore. Check the airline operating the flight, including any partner on a connecting ticket.
What happens to my power bank if my duffel is gate-checked?
Take it out. The FAA requires spare lithium batteries and power banks to stay in the cabin, so if a duffel is checked at the gate or planeside, remove them first and keep them with you. Our travel power bank guide covers airline capacity limits.
Are wheeled duffels good for carry-on?
Rarely. Wheels and a handle add weight and count toward the size limit, so a wheeled carry-on duffel holds less than a soft bag of the same outer size and uses more of a 7 or 8 kg allowance. Wheels pay off on large checked duffels.
How many liters do I need for a week?
A 35 to 40 L duffel holds a week of clothes if you plan one laundry stop and wear your heaviest shoes on the plane. For a long weekend, 25 to 30 L is enough. Cold-weather trips with bulky layers push most people to a checked 55 to 65 L bag.
