Botswana sits in the heart of southern Africa, a largely landlocked country whose borders shape trade, travel and regional ties. Its position between deserts, rivers and neighboring states makes knowing the bordering countries useful for planning trips or understanding regional geography.
There are 4 countries that border Botswana: Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, ranging from Namibia to Zimbabwe. For each neighbor you’ll find below a concise table organized with the columns Flag, Border length (km), Major crossings — you’ll find below.

Descriptions
South Africa
The southeastern border with South Africa stretches across semi-arid plains and riverine sections from the Namibia tripoint toward the Indian Ocean. Botswana’s longest border, it hosts major trade and passenger crossings near Gaborone and key transport routes into South African markets.
Namibia
The long western border follows the Kalahari and desert fringes from the Namibia tripoint down toward the southwest. It’s sparsely populated, crossed by the Trans‑Kalahari corridor and local posts, and important for freight and tourism access to the Okavango and Kgalagadi parks.
Zimbabwe
The northeastern border runs mainly along the Limpopo and Shashe rivers, forming a natural frontier with Zimbabwe. It provides crossings into the Victoria Falls and Tuli Block regions and supports border towns, wildlife tourism and seasonal trade between the two countries.
Zambia
The short northern border sits at the Kazungula area on the Zambezi, a strategic chokepoint linking Zambia and Botswana. The Kazungula Bridge (opened recently) replaced the ferry, boosting road and trade links on the North–South Corridor.
