No country shares a land border with Tonga. It’s an island kingdom of roughly 170 islands scattered across the South Pacific, so every boundary it has runs through open ocean. Five neighbors share a maritime boundary with it: Fiji, Samoa, Niue, Wallis and Futuna, and American Samoa.

TLDR

  • Land borders: zero.
  • Maritime neighbors: Fiji, Samoa, Niue, Wallis and Futuna (France), American Samoa (United States).
  • Closest to Tonga’s main island: Niue, about 600 km east-northeast.
  • Only live dispute: the Minerva Reefs, claimed by both Tonga and Fiji.

Tonga’s neighbors at a glance

Neighbor Status Boundary type Treaty Approx. distance
Fiji Independent country Maritime 2015 770 km from Nuku’alofa to Suva
Samoa Independent country Maritime None I could confirm 300+ km from Tonga’s northern islands
Niue Self-governing, in free association with New Zealand Maritime None I could confirm 600 km from Tongatapu
Wallis and Futuna French overseas collectivity Maritime 1980 600+ km from Tonga’s northern islands
American Samoa US territory Maritime 1980 300+ km from Niuatoputapu

Two of the five aren’t sovereign countries. Wallis and Futuna belongs to France, and American Samoa belongs to the United States. If a quiz asks for “countries,” the strict answer is Fiji, Samoa and Niue (and Niue is technically a self-governing state, not a UN member).

How a border works when there’s no land

Islands don’t have borders in the line-on-a-map sense. They have territorial seas and exclusive economic zones. Under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, a coastal state controls waters up to 12 nautical miles out, and holds rights to fish and drill in an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) extending 200 nautical miles from its baselines.

Tonga’s islands are spread out, which gives it an EEZ far larger than its land area. The CIA World Factbook lists Tonga’s land area at about 747 square kilometers. Its ocean claim is hundreds of times that.

When two EEZs would overlap, as they do across most of the gaps between Pacific island groups, the neighbors negotiate a line, usually the midpoint. That line is the “border” here.

The five neighbors

Fiji

Fiji is the biggest neighbor and the one Tonga trades and travels with the most. Suva is roughly 770 km from Nuku’alofa, and Fiji’s eastern Lau Islands sit much closer to Tonga’s southern groups than Suva does. The two countries signed a maritime boundary agreement in 2015.

Fiji is also where the one real argument sits (see the Minerva Reefs section below).

Samoa

Samoa lies north of Tonga’s outlying northern islands, Niuatoputapu and Tafahi, which sit a few hundred kilometers from Samoa’s Savai’i. Like Tonga, Samoa has its own maritime boundaries with neighboring Pacific nations. From Nuku’alofa the distance is over 1,000 km. If you’re asking which country is closest to Tonga by the shortest water gap, Samoa and American Samoa both compete for the answer, depending on which island you count from.

Niue

Niue is one of the smallest countries in Oceania, a single raised coral island of about 1,600 people, roughly 600 km east-northeast of Tongatapu. It’s the neighbor most people forget. Niue runs its own affairs but is in free association with New Zealand, which handles its defense.

Wallis and Futuna

This French territory lies north-northwest of Tonga, with the two island groups separated from Tonga’s Vava’u and Niuatoputapu by several hundred kilometers of open water. France and Tonga agreed their maritime boundary in 1980. Wallis and Futuna also borders Fiji and Samoa at sea, so the area is a crowded corner of the Pacific.

American Samoa

American Samoa is a US territory, and Tutuila, its main island, is the most distant of the five neighbors from Tonga’s main island but among the closest to its northern outliers. The United States and Tonga settled their maritime boundary in 1980.

The Minerva Reefs dispute

The Minerva Reefs are two submerged atolls about 400 km southwest of Tongatapu. At high tide they’re mostly underwater. At low tide, bits of reef show above the surface, and that’s enough to make them worth arguing over because they’d carry fishing rights.

Fiji and Tonga both claim them. Tonga formally proclaimed sovereignty in 1972. Fiji disputes this and has stated its own claim to the reefs and the waters around them. Neither side has resolved the matter, and the reefs remain the only location where Tonga’s maritime reach is openly contested.

FAQ

Does Tonga share a land border with any country?

No. Tonga has no land borders. It has a coastline of about 419 km and no neighbor you can reach by road or on foot.

What is the closest country to Tonga?

By distance from Tongatapu, Niue is closest at about 600 km. From Tonga’s northern islands, Samoa and American Samoa are the nearest.

Is Tonga bordered by any country?

By sea, yes. Five neighbors share maritime boundaries with it. None share a land border.

Who owns the Minerva Reefs?

Both Tonga and Fiji claim them. No agreement settles the question.
