Chicago’s normal high swings from 32°F in January to 85°F in July, and on the same afternoon the lakefront can sit well below the neighborhoods a mile inland. So what to pack for Chicago depends on your month first and your plans second.

This Chicago packing list keeps one capsule all year and changes the outer layers by season.

What to pack for Chicago: the capsule and the formulas

For four days, pack 4 tops, 2 bottoms, 1 mid layer, 1 outer layer and 2 pairs of shoes. From mid-November through March, swap one pair of shoes for snow boots and add a winter coat, thermals, a hat, gloves and a neck gaiter. Every outfit below comes from those pieces.

WhenDaytimeEveningBad-weather swap
December to FebruaryThermal top, sweater, jeans, long insulated coat, bootsSame coat over a dark sweater, boots stay onPull the gaiter over your nose
March to MayLong-sleeve top, sweater, jeans, jacket or shell (winter coat in March)Add a scarf and close the jacketRain shell over the sweater
June to AugustT-shirt, shorts or light pants, walking shoesLight pants, thin overshirt for the lakefrontPackable shell, no umbrella for festivals
September to NovemberShirt, sweater, jeans, mid-weight jacketJacket and scarfShell over the sweater, hat after mid-October

Outside winter, shoes matter most. Downtown is flat but long: the Riverwalk runs 1.25 miles, the Lakefront Trail runs 18 and many L stations involve stairs. Bring two pairs so one can dry out.

In the Loop and on the Magnificent Mile, theft is the common risk for visitors, so keep valuables in a zipped bag worn in front. Our guide to areas to avoid in Chicago maps where hotels sit against the city’s crime rates.

Chicago weather by month, and why the lake changes it

The figures below are NOAA 1991-2020 normals for O’Hare, which sits inland. The lake surface averages about 35°F in March and 54°F in June across Lake Michigan, so a breeze off the water pulls lakefront afternoons below the O’Hare number from spring into early summer. Plan one layer warmer than the table if your day ends at Navy Pier or North Avenue Beach. Rain days count any day with 0.01 inch or more of rain or melted snow.

Winter in Chicago: what to wear December to February

The formula: thermal top and leggings, sweater, jeans, long insulated coat, waterproof boots, hat, gloves, gaiter.

Chicago averages 38 inches of snow a year, and almost all of it falls in these three months plus March. Your coat decides the trip. It should have a hood and reach at least the hip, because the walk from the L or across a river bridge is where the wind finds you. On Reddit, one r/chicago thread on winter clothes suggests owning two coats, one for deep cold and one for milder days. A visitor gets the same range from one coat with thermals you can take off.

Chicago in December

Normal high 37°F, low 24°F, 7.6 inches of snow and a sunset near 4:20 pm mid-month. The Christkindlmarket at Daley Plaza runs to December 24 in 2026 and the Gallagher Way market by Wrigley Field stays open to December 31. Both mean an hour or more standing on cold pavement with a mug, so thermals and thick wool socks earn their place here. Touchscreen gloves stop you baring a hand for every ticket and transit app.

Chicago in January

January is the coldest month, with a 32°F high, a 19°F low, 16.5 days that never climb above freezing and 11.3 inches of snow. O’Hare hit -11°F with a -36°F wind chill on January 23, 2026. On days like that, cover all skin and use the Pedway, a network of passages under more than 40 Loop blocks, though hours vary by section. Restaurant Week starts January 22 in 2027. Wear the boots to dinner.

Chicago in February

February holds at 36°F and 22°F with 10.7 inches of snow, and it brings the month’s real wardrobe problem: road salt. Dark trousers and leather pick up white lines from the sidewalks by the first afternoon. In February 2015 my black trousers came back from two days in the Loop with a salt tide mark at each ankle, and the hotel cleaner could not take them until Monday. Pack a pair of jeans you do not mind washing.

The Chinatown Lunar New Year parade falls on February 14 in 2027 and is outdoors. The Chicago Auto Show at McCormick Place, February 13 to 21 in 2027, is the opposite: expect to carry your coat all day.

Spring in Chicago: what to wear March to May

The formula: long-sleeve top, sweater, jeans, jacket, rain shell in the bag, closed shoes.

Spring here arrives late. The normal last freeze at O’Hare is April 21, so keep a hat and light gloves in the bag until then. Rain also builds through the season, from 2.45 inches in March to 4.49 in May.

Chicago in March

Normal high 47°F, low 31°F, with 5.5 inches of snow still on the books. Pack the winter boots for the first half of the month. In 2027 the river dyeing and downtown parade fall on Saturday, March 13; in 2026 the dyeing began at 10 am and people watched from Upper Wacker and the bridges. The parade route screens bags and does not allow coolers, hydration packs or personal water bottles. I waited on Upper Wacker for the dyeing in March 2017 in canvas sneakers and could not feel my toes by the time the boats came out.

Chicago in April

April climbs to 59°F and drops to 40°F, with 12.3 wet days and 1.3 inches of late snow. A waterproof shell over a sweater handles nearly every day. The Chicago Architecture Center river cruise is back by now. It runs 90 minutes and leaves rain or shine; there is a climate-controlled cabin, but the upper deck has the views and no roof, so bring the shell. Baseball is also back, and an April night game at Wrigley calls for the full winter layers.

Chicago in May

May is the wettest month in the normals, with 4.49 inches over 12.5 days, with highs of 71°F and lows of 51°F. Sneakers can replace boots now, though a waterproof pair helps. Lifeguarded beach season opens the Friday before Memorial Day, but the lake averages about 42°F this month, so a swimsuit stays home unless your hotel has a pool.

Summer in Chicago: what to wear June to August

The formula: T-shirt, shorts or light pants, walking shoes, sun hat, thin overshirt in the bag.

Expect about 14 days at 90°F or above across the three months. Thin cotton or linen does the work by day. The overshirt is for two places: the lakefront after dark and any museum or restaurant with strong air conditioning.

Aerosol sunscreen is prohibited at Wrigley Field and Lollapalooza; a 0.5 oz stick passes both and covers lakefront days when July highs hit 85F.

Chicago in June

June reaches 80°F by day and 61°F at night, with sunset around 8:27 pm and 15 hours of daylight. Lake Michigan is still only about 54°F, so the shore can feel like a different month. In June 2018 I walked from a West Loop lunch to Navy Pier in a sleeveless dress, and the air dropped about 15 degrees over the last half mile. Carry a light layer for anything east of Michigan Avenue.

The lakefront steps on a June evening

The Pride Parade fills Northalsted on the last Sunday of June, which is June 27 in 2027, and the Blues Festival usually takes over Millennium Park early in the month. Both are long hours on your feet, so choose your walking shoes over sandals.

Chicago in July

July is the hottest month: 85°F by day, 66°F at night, 6.5 days at 90°F or more and 23.7 days above 80°F. The July 1995 heat wave pushed the heat index at O’Hare to 119°F, so take humid stretches seriously. Pack two extra tops, since one shirt rarely lasts a humid day, and bring a refillable bottle.

Taste of Chicago usually fills Grant Park early to mid-month, and Lollapalooza usually arrives at the end of July or the start of August. The bag and sunscreen limits for the festival are in the table further down.

Chicago in August

August highs average 83°F and lows 65°F. Expect 3.7 days at 90°F or more and 4.25 inches of rain, so keep the packable shell. The Air and Water Show is usually a mid-August weekend, centered on North Avenue Beach from 10:30 am to 3 pm. There is no public parking at the beach and you sit on sand or grass, so bring a hat and a towel. The lake is at its warmest this month, at about 70°F across Lake Michigan, so pack a swimsuit in July or August.

Fall in Chicago: what to wear September to November

The formula: shirt, sweater, jeans, mid-weight jacket, scarf, shell for wet days. By mid-November, switch to the winter formula.

The normal high falls 28 degrees from September to November, so a September list and a November list share little beyond the jeans.

Chicago in September

September sits at 76°F and 57°F with only 1.6 days at 90°F or more, and 3.19 inches of rain. T-shirts still work by day; add a light jacket for evenings by the water. The free Jazz Festival fills Millennium Park on Labor Day weekend. Lifeguards and swimming end after Labor Day, so swimwear is out for the rest of the month. Riot Fest is September 17 to 19 in 2027 in Douglass Park. Park District repairs on the Lakefront Trail, announced in September 2026, move north from 63rd Street to Foster Avenue over several months, so check for closures before planning a long walk or run.

Chicago in October

The normal high is 63°F and the low 45°F, and the normal first freeze at O’Hare is October 19. Tourism pages often call October the driest month, but the O’Hare normals show 3.43 inches over 10.5 days, so the shell stays in. You do not need a winter coat: a mid-weight jacket and sweater cover the month, with a hat and gloves in the bag after about the 20th.

The Chicago Marathon is Sunday, October 10 in 2027. Grant Park spectators go through security, and backpacks, large bags, chairs and hard coolers are prohibited, along with bulky or face-covering costumes. Hold your layers in a small bag and expect to stand for hours in morning cool.

Chicago in November

November starts at the tail of fall and ends in winter: 48°F by day, 34°F at night, 1.8 inches of snow and a first measurable snowfall around November 16. Clocks change early in the month, and the sunset moves to about 4:29 pm by the 15th, so the evening layer matters more than the numbers suggest.

In 2026 the Christkindlmarket and the Millennium Park tree lighting both open on November 20, the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival follows on November 21 and the Thanksgiving Parade runs along State Street on November 26. Pack for standing still: a warm coat, hat, gloves and thermals for the parade and the market.

Game day and festival bags in Chicago

Bag rules change the outfit more than any dress code, because each Chicago venue sets its own limit. Wrigley Field has no storage, so a refused bag is your problem. Check your event page before you leave the hotel, since rules can differ for concerts.

VenueBags allowedAlso banned
Wrigley FieldUp to 16x16x8 in; no backpacks, even clear onesAerosol sunscreen, glass or metal bottles, umbrellas with metal tips or over 10 in
Soldier FieldClear bag up to 12x6x12 in or a one-gallon freezer bag, plus a clutch up to 4.5×6.5 inCoolers, briefcases, computer bags
United Center (2025-26 policy)Small bag up to 10x6x2 in; no backpacksUmbrellas, laptops, outside food and drink
LollapaloozaOne-pocket clutch up to 6×9 in, or clear bag up to 12x6x12 inUmbrellas, aerosol sunscreen, chairs, blankets, coolers

A hooded shell or a poncho replaces the umbrella at all four. A clear crossbody fits Soldier Field, Lollapalooza and Wrigley; the United Center needs a much smaller bag. For a Cubs game before June, wear one layer more than the street forecast suggests.

Clear Stadium Crossbody Bag

Clear Stadium Crossbody BagBudget

Soldier Field allows clear bags up to 12x6x12 in and Lollapalooza wants the same for larger bags; this one measures 10x12x4 in and also passes Wrigley's 16x16x8 limit.

What to wear in Chicago at night

Smart casual covers almost every Chicago evening. That means dark jeans or trousers with a sweater or a clean shirt, and a pair of shoes you can walk in. Even the opera asks for little: the Lyric Opera has no formal dress code, weeknights lean business casual and weekends a bit dressier. Large bags and backpacks stay at its coat check, for a fee.

In winter, leave dress shoes out and wear your boots to dinner.

What to leave out of a Chicago bag

  • A large backpack. Wrigley and United Center refuse it, Soldier Field and Lollapalooza want clear bags and the Marathon bans it in Grant Park.
  • A full-size umbrella. Lollapalooza and the United Center do not allow them and Wrigley limits them. A hooded shell works everywhere.
  • Aerosol sunscreen. It is prohibited at Wrigley and Lollapalooza. Bring a stick or lotion.
  • Swimwear outside July and August. The lake stays cold into June, and beaches are guarded only from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day.
  • A metal water bottle for ballgames. Wrigley bans glass and metal bottles. Lollapalooza accepts empty refillables, so check before you carry one.
  • A suit or formal dress, unless you have a gala or a wedding. Few Chicago evenings call for one.
  • Sandals, October to May. Sidewalks are too wet or too salted, and evenings too cool, for all but a few days.

Chicago packing FAQ

Should I check a bag or bring a carry-on to Chicago?

A carry-on works from May to October. Check a bag in winter, since a coat and boots fill a small case, or wear both on the plane. If you take the Blue Line from O'Hare, trains run around the clock and reach the Loop in 40 to 45 minutes, but CTA rules bar luggage that blocks the doors or needs more than one trip to move.

Do Chicago museums and observation decks have lockers?

Some do. Shedd Aquarium rents lockers, including an XL size that fits a carry-on, and the Field Museum has lockers at its south door. Skydeck Chicago and 360 Chicago have none, so drop bags at your hotel first on a checkout day.

What is the best month to visit Chicago if you want to pack light?

September. The normal high is 76°F, the low 57°F, rain falls on about 9 days and only 1.6 days reach 90°F, so a T-shirt, a sweater and a light jacket cover the trip. June is close, but it needs a warmer layer for the lakefront.

Can you swim in Lake Michigan in Chicago?

Yes, at guarded beaches from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day. Lifeguards work 11 am to 7 pm and admission is free. Swim only at guarded beaches, and stay out under a red flag. Alcohol, smoking and dogs are not allowed on the sand, according to the Park District.

Do I need a plug adapter in Chicago?

Only if you are coming from outside North America. Chicago uses US Type A and B outlets at 120 V and 60 Hz. Visitors from Europe, the UK or most of Asia need an adapter, and their devices must accept 120 V. Most phone and laptop chargers do, but older hair dryers and straighteners often do not.
