Namibia’s rivers thread through deserts, savanna and floodplains, shaping where people settle, where wildlife concentrates, and how landscapes respond to rare rains. Understanding these waterways adds practical context to travel, conservation and local livelihoods.
There are 23 Rivers in Namibia, ranging from Auob to Zambezi; for each, you’ll find below the columns Length (km),Flow type,Basin/terminus,Notes — see the list you’ll find below.
Which Namibian rivers are perennial versus seasonal?
Most Namibian rivers are ephemeral, flowing only after rains, with a few perennial reaches in the far north and along cross-border systems. Check the Flow type column in the list for each river and use recent rainfall maps or local reports when planning visits, since conditions can change year to year.
How do these rivers affect travel and wildlife in Namibia?
Rivers form vital corridors of green in arid areas, concentrating wildlife and supporting irrigation where water is available, but dry riverbeds can also become sudden hazards during flash floods. Use the Length (km) and Basin/terminus info to assess crossing difficulty and consult local guidance for current conditions.

Images and Descriptions

Orange River
The Orange River is Namibia’s largest border river. It flows from Lesotho westward to the Atlantic Ocean and forms much of Namibia’s southern border. It is perennial and supports farms, towns, and dams. Include it because it is the country’s main permanent river and longest watercourse in the region.

Kunene
The Kunene (Cunene) River runs along the northwest border with Angola. It flows year-round in its main channel and reaches the Atlantic. It supports hydropower and irrigation and forms a key transboundary watercourse in northern Namibia.

Zambezi
The Zambezi River touches Namibia at the far northeast Caprivi (Zambezi) strip. It is a major perennial African river that flows east to the Indian Ocean. Include it for its short but important Namibian border reach and regional importance.

Kavango (Okavango/Cubango)
The Kavango (called Okavango or Cubango upstream) flows from Angola into Namibia’s Kavango region. It has strong seasonal floods and year-round pools. It does not reach the sea in Namibia but fuels wetlands and the Okavango Delta downstream in Botswana.

Chobe
The Chobe River runs along the border between Namibia and Botswana near the Zambezi. It is largely perennial with seasonal high flows. It feeds floodplains and wildlife areas and connects with the Zambezi system.

Kwando (Cuando)
The Kwando (Cuando) River flows in the eastern Caprivi area and becomes part of the Linyanti/Chobe network. It has strong seasonal floods and extensive floodplains. Include it for its role in the northeastern transboundary basins.

Linyanti
The Linyanti is a swampy channel and river system in the far northeast. It forms when Kwando waters spread into floodplains and link toward the Chobe. It floods seasonally and supports rich wildlife habitats.

Fish River
The Fish River is a major southern river known for the Fish River Canyon. It carries strong seasonal flows and deepens a dramatic gorge. It is mainly ephemeral with permanent pools and is important for landscape and tourism.

Swakop
The Swakop River flows from central Namibia toward the Atlantic near Swakopmund. It is ephemeral and delivers rare floods to the coast. It shapes local towns and has historical and ecological importance in central-west Namibia.

Kuiseb
The Kuiseb River runs west from central Namibia toward the coast near Walvis Bay. It is ephemeral and usually stops short of the sea except in big floods. It is famous for holding back mobile dunes and protecting settlements to the south.

Ugab
The Ugab River flows across Damaraland to the western Namib and into the Atlantic during large floods. It is an ephemeral desert river that supports unique plants, wildlife and desert-adapted elephants in dry times.

Huab
The Huab River runs in northern Damaraland toward the Skeleton Coast. It is ephemeral and reaches the sea only in very wet years. It carries seasonal floods and sustains local communities and wildlife.

Hoanib
The Hoanib River drains Damaraland to the northwest. It is ephemeral and often dry, but floods reach the Atlantic in wet years. It supports desert-adapted wildlife and is a key river in Namibia’s arid northwest.

Hoarusib
The Hoarusib River flows to the Skeleton Coast area and is ephemeral. It forms steep, vegetated riverbanks and reaches the sea rarely. Include it for its dramatic desert channels and role in coastal desert ecology.

Omaruru
The Omaruru River runs from the central highlands toward the west. It is ephemeral and supplies seasonal water to towns and farms. It helps shape the landscape around Omaruru town and empties toward the coastal plain in flood events.

Khan
The Khan River is a central Namibian river that drains toward the west and joins the Swakop system. It is ephemeral and flows mainly after rains. It is notable for passing near Karibib and Usakos and feeding local basins.

Tsondab
The Tsondab River lies in the Namib Desert and flows into the sand sea and pans. It is ephemeral and rarely reaches the coast. It is included for its role in forming desert pans and seasonal wetlands near Sossusvlei.

Omatako
The Omatako River runs in central Namibia and flows only after rains. It is ephemeral and drains parts of the Otjozondjupa region. It is a local watercourse of note for nearby communities and for linking inland basins.

Auob
The Auob River lies in southern Namibia’s Kalahari region and flows intermittently toward Botswana. It is ephemeral and part of the dryland drainage system. Include it for its role in the southern interior and cross-border sands.

Eiseb
The Eiseb River sits in northeastern Namibia and flows seasonally through semi-arid landscapes. It is ephemeral and feeds local pans and groundwater. It matters for livestock, settlements, and as a regional tributary during rains.

Okatana
The Okatana River runs in northern Namibia near Oshakati and the Oshana floodplain system. It is ephemeral but forms important seasonal wetlands. It supports local agriculture and links to larger northern drainage networks.

Khumib
The Khumib River drains parts of northwest Namibia toward the coastal deserts. It is ephemeral and commonly dries between rains. It is included for its local geomorphological role and for supporting sparse desert life when it flows.

Grootfontein (Omatjenne)*
The Grootfontein (Omatjenne) stream is a local river near the town of Grootfontein in northeast Namibia. It is ephemeral and serves nearby farms and settlements during rains. Marked here as a named local watercourse of regional interest.
